Most places will remain dry this week, bar the odd shower, cooler from tomorrow before heat returns on Friday.
After a hot and sunny weekend, for most it will stay dry and settled through this coming week, but there will be some subtle changes compared to recent days, as it will turn briefly cooler and cloudier from the north, before hotting up again by the end of the week. High pressure will still be in control of our weather but as it will be repositioned to the west of the British Isles, it will allow a cold front to drop south introducing cooler and cloudier conditions for all from Tuesday after another hot day in the south today. By end of the week, we lose the fresher northerly flow, so it will warm up again for most.
cooler and fresher air spreading south today and overnight
Another warm and uncomfortable night in the south last night, the temperature already 21C in London and 20C in Cardiff at 5am. It is a sunny start across southern and western areas, but across the northeast there is more in the way of cloud to start the day, thick enough to bring some patchy drizzle across eastern Scotland and NE England.
The cloudier skies in the northeast will edge south towards SE England into the afternoon, brought by a weak cold front moving south acros the UK today, perhaps producing a few showers across eastern England. Ahead of the cold front, still humid, sunny and hot across southern England and South Wales, temperatures perhaps reaching 28-30C inland, though last hot day until later in the week. Cooler and fresher across northern areas following the cold front heading south, but staying mostly dry and sunny, though cloudier towards eastern coasts, temperatures here reaching 19-20C inland, 16-17C along coasts.
A few well-scattered showers at first this evening across SE England, though very hit and miss, otherwise another mostly dry night with clear spells, cloudier towards eastern coasts and northern Scotland - where we could see some drizzle arrive. A more comfortable and fresher night in the south compared to recent nights.
Tuesday
A cloudier day on Tuesday, cloud thick enough across Scotland and N. Ireland for some patchy light rain or drizzle, some bright or sunny spells towards the south and southwest - where it will be warmest, with temperatures reaching 23-24C, elsewhere 19-21C, cooler along eastern coasts where there will be an onshore brisk breeze. Feeling fresher than recent days in the south.
Wednesday is looking like another largely dry day, with sunny spells and variable amounts of cloud for most. Thicker cloud with drizzle or light rain across the western Scotland though and a risk of a few showers across Ireland and Northern Ireland. Temperatures reaching 17-20C in the north, 20-23C in the south.
Not a great deal of change for eastern areas on Thursday, largely dry with sunny spells. Cloud and patchy rain will largely fizzle out across the far northwest to be replaced by sunny spells, but a risk of some sharp showers, perhaps thundery, developing in the afternoon across western areas, but they will be hit and miss. Temperatures one or two degrees warmer than Wednesday in the south.
Friday’s looking largely dry and sunny, becoming very warm in the south again, where temperatures may reach 26-28C, low twenties widely elsewhere away from the far north. An isolated heavy and thundery shower risk developing in the afternoon across the north and west.
Heat returns in the south on Friday
Next weekend looking hot and humid in the south on Saturday, but a risk of thunderstorms perhaps developing ahead of cooler and fresher conditions pushing in from the Atlantic across most parts into Sunday, accompanied by breezier conditions in the north on Sunday.
