Weekend: West Is Best, Cool Everywhere. Warmer & Drier Early Next week

Issued: 12th May 2018 09:10

Compared to the very warm or hot weather last weekend, this weekend will not be quite as sunny, dry or as warm. West will be best this weekend, sunny in the west both days, but with a few showers developing later today. After a bright start rain will spread north across eastern areas, lingering into Sunday morning, before becoming confined to the northeast. Otherwise Sunday for most should become dry with some sunshine. On the cool side this weekend and where skies are clear overnight – it will turn chilly. Early next week should see an improvement, as a ridge of high pressure builds, allowing some warm sunshine to develop away from the far east, where it may be grey and cool for a time. Turning fresher for all from mid-week, as a northerly wind develops.

Today

For now, a dry and bright or sunny start for most this morning, though overnight rain still lingering across the far north and northeast of Scotland. Some mist and fog patches across the Welsh Marches and NW England, but these should clear soon.

Western areas will enjoy the best of the sunshine this morning and into the afternoon, and though many will stay dry, some heavy and perhaps thundery showers will develop across the far SW of England, Ireland and N. Ireland. Further east, cloud and rain clearing the northeast of Scotland, then most of eastern Scotland and NE England becoming dry with sunny spells into the afternoon. However, further south, cloud will increase across SE England and East Anglia, with outbreaks of rain spreading up from France here later this morning and into the afternoon, the rain locally heavy and perhaps thundery later.

Compared to last weekend, when temperatures widely reached the twenties Celsius, today temperatures will seem rather disappointing, reaching 12-15C at best, perhaps 16-17C across eastern England before the cloud and rain arrives later. However, winds will at least be light, making it feel pleasant in the sun.

Tonight

Outbreaks of rain spreading north up the eastern side of England and eventually eastern Scotland overnight, locally heavy and perhaps thundery, some uncertainty over the western extent of the rain, perhaps fringing into parts of the Midlands at times. Otherwise, western areas becoming dry once showers in the far west fade, with clear spells developing and turning chilly.

Sunday

A cloudy and damp morning and perhaps early afternoon too across eastern areas of England and Scotland tomorrow, rain eventually clearing northeast by evening to allow drier conditions and brightening skies to develop into the afternoon. After a chilly start, western areas enjoying another sunny day, largely dry, though a few showers could develop over Northern Ireland. A warmer day in the south of England, where temperatures should reach 15-16C, elsewhere 12-14C more likely.

Monday

Monday perhaps staying dull and cool across SE England and East Anglia, accompanied by a brisk northeast wind and a little drizzle. Otherwise most other parts having a dry and sunny day, though western Scotland, Ireland and N. Ireland will likely see cloud thicken in the afternoon. Temperatures reaching 17-20C in the sunshine, cooler where it stays cloudy.

Tuesday

Staying mainly dry with sunny spells on Tuesday as high pressure builds, warmer too, with temperatures reaching the low twenties Celsius across England, Wales and eastern Scotland. Perhaps some cloud and rain arriving in the far northwest in the afternoon and risk of an isolated thundery shower developing across southern England.

Rest of the week

Cloud and patchy light rain or drizzle spreading southeast on Wednesday, introducing cooler and fresher conditions for rest of the week, as northerly breeze develops, though with high pressure close by across the west, it will be dry and bright or sunny on Thursday and Friday, though it may be cloudier with a brisk northeast wind towards the southeast.
