Hurricane Nate Strikes U.S. Back Home: Changeable Week Ahead, Warm In The South

The very active hurricane season continues this weekend with Hurricane Nate, which has left a trail of destruction across central America, killing 25 people. The hurricane moved north across the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, its forward motion of 28mph the fastest recorded of a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico, before making landfall as a category one storm over Biloxi, Mississippi last night. Nate is bringing winds near 85mph along the U.S. Gulf coast, a life-threatening storm surge along the coast and heavy rainfall with a risk of flash flooding to the Deep South, as it moves inland.

Back home, more benign though changeable weather on offer in the week ahead. We will have our own wet and windy weather to contend with mid-week, as deep Atlantic lows encroach to the northwest. However, apart from this blip, for many it be a mostly dry week and it will be warm across southern areas, with temperatures reaching the high teens most days. By next Saturday, the models are even hinting at temperatures reaching the low twenties, which is well above average for mid-October.

Today

Saturday was a rather cloudy and damp day for many, but Sunday promises a better second half to the weekend, with most places largely dry with sunny spells developing and light winds. N. Ireland, western Scotland, NW England and west Wales are seeing more in the way of cloud this morning and here it will be cloudier today, with occasional showers moving through on a northwesterly breeze, some moving through the Cheshire Gap towards the North Midlands. But otherwise many southern, central and eastern areas should have a dry and bright day with sunny spells. Later in the day, more general rain will move in across northern and western Scotland.

With generally lighter winds today, it will feel pleasant in the sunny spells, temperatures reaching 13-15C in the north, 15-18C in the south.

Tonight

Through the evening and overnight, rain across western Scotland will slowly spread east across the rest of Scotland during the night, though the far south of Scotland could stay dry. Elsewhere, dry with clear spells for many, though there could be a few showers across northern England.

Monday

A similar day on Monday really. Cloud and rain at first across eastern Scotland clearing to join elsewhere to mostly dry and bright conditions during the morning. Through the day, always cloudier in the west – thick enough for the odd light shower, with the best of the sunshine in the east, but even here can’t rule out an isolated light shower. Outbreaks of heavy rain arriving across Northern Ireland in the afternoon, before spreading east across the northern half of Britain during the evening. Temperatures reaching 14-15C in the north, 16-18C in the south.

Tuesday

Rain clearing northern areas in the morning, then most areas becoming mostly dry, best of the sunshine towards eastern England, always cloudier towards the north and west. Temperatures reaching high teens in the south. Turning wet and windy across the northwest during the evening, with gales developing across western Scotland.

Wednesday

Windy with cloud and outbreaks of rain edging slowly southeast across Britain on Wednesday, brighter but showery conditions following across Scotland, N. Ireland and north of England during the afternoon and evening.

Turning wetter and windier mid-week

Thursday & Friday

Dry for most on Thursday, with England and Wales seeing the best of the sunshine, cloudier across Scotland with wet and windy conditions arriving across the north by the evening. Perhaps a cloudier day on Friday away from southern and eastern England, with outbreaks of rain spreading slowly southeast across northern areas. Warm across southern areas, temperatures reaching 17-19C, perhaps 20C in a few spots on Friday.
