Unsettled through Christmas week and into the New Year

Low pressure will be a regular visitor to the UK during Christmas week, keeping the weather unsettled, with spells of wind and rain moving through.

Low pressures will be coming and going as we move through Christmas week and towards New Year, bringing spells of wind and rain with them. Colder air is in situ for Boxing Day, but in the main, it'll be on the mild side, with the exception of Scotland, where it'll often be chillier, but even so, after today, snow will generally be limited to the higher ground.

Picking up the story for boxing day, Polar air has spread south overnight, so there'll be a chillier feel everywhere than there was on Christmas day. In the north and west, there'll be plenty of showers, which will fall as hail, sleet and snow in the north and on higher ground. There'll be accumulations of snow in parts of Scotland and on northern hills. There are weather warnings issued by the Met Office to cover the risk of snow and ice.

Head further south and east, though, and it'll be a different story with just a smattering of showers likely, and away from those, there'll be long sunny spells. Temperatures will range from 6-8c in the south and 1-4c further north. But feeling colder in the wind.

Overnight, a widespread frost is likely, with showers continuing to affect the north and west to start, although these will tend to die back as the night wears on. That's because of a brief rise in pressure ahead of an Atlantic system that will arrive on Tuesday. That will bring a band of rain west to east, with snow up over the higher ground of Scotland. It'll be windy too, with gales near exposed coasts.

The next spell of rain will spread up from the southwest overnight and into Wednesday, along with strong winds again - especially in the south. We'll need to keep an eye on increasingly strong winds for southern Britain later in the day and into Thursday as a low pressure system crosses the country further north.

Thursday itself looks blustery and showery, with some quite cold air in place - so those showers are likely to be wintry up over the hills and in Scotland. The next spell of wet, windy weather won't be too far off, though, waiting in the wings to spread in for the end of the week.

The weekend keeps a very similar theme coming, with 2023 set to get off to an unsettled start. Happy Christmas!
