Cooler air from the northwest spreading to all parts to start the week

As a depression to the North of Scotland makes its way into the Norwegian Sea, it's introducing cooler, fresher air, along with some showery rain from the North West.

As a depression to the North of Scotland makes its way into the Norwegian Sea, it's introducing cooler, fresher air from the North West. So East Anglia and the South East, in particular, will notice the difference today after Weybourne in Norfolk reached a hot and humid 31.7C yesterday despite a quite fresh at times breeze.

Fronts ahead of the cooler weather have been giving bursts of showery rain, even across East Anglia and the South East overnight, although not everywhere saw this. There's even been a few thunderstorms across Scotland and Northern Ireland in the past few days, with Wales and northern England seeing a few bursts of heavy rain yesterday. But as the fronts have come South, they have weakened, leaving much of the East and South with very little rain where it's most needed. So will the East and South see some today?

Rainfall totals over the last 24 hours

On a cooler, fresher day, most parts will be subject to showers as embedded troughs move from West to East across England and Wales. Some in the North will be heavy, but they'll be fewer and lighter generally further South, where some places will miss them. So again no guarantee of rain for the South and South East, with most parts here probably only seeing just a brief passing shower. Across Northern Ireland and Scotland, we have showery rain this morning that'll move into northern England later, leaving just a scattering of showers behind. But the trend will be for the showers to become fewer in the West, leaving Northern Ireland with lengthening sunny intervals by evening in an otherwise often cloudy day for most.

Showers moving southeast today

A South West then North Westerly wind continues to be quite blustery, especially across the Northern Isles, where gusts of 45 to 50mph are expected. Top temperatures 14 to 17C in the North and 18 to 23C further South, with 24 or maybe 25C briefly across the North of Norfolk, well down on yesterday's values.

There'll still be showers into the evening, especially across North East England, where a few could be heavy at first. But they'll gradually fade towards dusk, mainly becoming confined to eastern England, with a few coming through the 'Cheshire Gap' after dark. As skies break, especially in the West, and a North Westerly breeze becomes lighter, it'll turn a little chilly. A few rural areas could even fall into single figures, but it won't be an unduly cool night, with the lowest temperatures mainly in the range of 9 to 13C.

Tomorrow will see more in the way of sunny intervals, but cloud amounts continue to vary. A few showers develop primarily in the East, where the odd one could be quite sharp, but much of the country should stay dry. The North Westerly breeze will be lighter, too, allowing temperatures to reach 14 to 18C in the North and North East and 19 to 22 or 23C further South.

Temperature map for Tuesday

Any remaining showers fade into the evening as an anticyclone becomes established across the country. Clearing skies and light winds after dark allow a few mist or fog patches to develop in rural areas where it may turn a little chilly again as temperatures fall to between 8 and 13C.

Looking further afield, the remainder of the week, apart from the odd shower, will be fine. There'll be sunny spells, and it'll also become warmer again; however, some uncertainties still exist regarding next weekend.
