Weekend weather - Early May warmth and fair overall

A good deal of fair weather this weekend which will be warm in any sunshine. Still a breeze off the North Sea and rain over the far northwest but settled, just cooler by night.

The underlying theme for the weekend is high pressure and steady conditions with mostly light winds. Warmth in any sunshine but a coolness overnight. Top temperatures should be 18 to 22C.

Friday evening’s rainband will clear southwards through southern Britain fragmenting overnight and leaving some breaks in the cloud after midnight.

For most, it will be dry weekend with a mix of cloudy skies, brighter times and some warm sunshine. That’s often the problem forecasting in anticyclonic conditions, where will keep more cloud and where will brighten up. On Saturday there will be the odd shower for eastern England, Cumbria and inland Scotland. Coastal district of southern and southwest England could see some lingering low cloud which will make it feel cooler at the coast this weekend.

Through Saturday evening and night, a warm front arrives for western Scotland with thicker cloud and patchy rain. This will linger over northern and western Scotland on Sunday with cloudy skies for Northern Ireland. Elsewhere looks dry but with a fair amount of cloud.

weekend weather UK

Any sunshine at this time of year brings real warmth and the UV rays are strong so do consider a hat or sunscreen if you are out for any length of time or in the middle part of the day. This weekend temperatures will peak in the high teens even low 20sC but sunshine is needed.

Early Saturday will be cool in the north and northeast after cooler air will have toppled in over the high pressure. Even a touch of frost for Highland Scotland. With a breeze off the sea on Saturday, North Sea coasts will have that familiar disappointing edge to the air.  Air temperatures here will stay around 13 or 14C but any sunshine will feel warm. Western Scotland and Northern Ireland should see 16 or 17C. Through the Midlands and for NW England in the high teens and southern Britain inland could see 19 to 22C.

A cool night for many, down into single figures away from SW Britain. Milder air soon edges in from the west and again any parts into the mid-teens with sunnier spots 17 to 20C.

Wind

Saturday, we have this easterly breeze off the North Sea, which will be noticeable around The Wash. Even ENE breeze into Norfolk and north Kent. Very light winds further west.

The high centre slides eastwards on Sunday, holding on more for SE Britain with clearer skies and hardly any breeze to start the day. Further northwest there will be more cloud to end the weekend and more of a southerly breeze. We keep the easterly flow into East Anglia and ENE into Kent. Elsewhere it will be a light to moderate southerly so warm air, we’ll just have to see how the cloud cover and sunshine do.
