First weekend in March looking settled but chilly

High pressure builds in for the weekend, bringing quieter often dry weather. However it will feel chilly in an easterly flow.

Issued: 2nd March 2022 16:48

High pressure is building for the weekend, so that should bring more steady and settled weather for the UK but it will feel cold.

Friday evening will turn colder with a frost in places by Saturday morning. It will be a tricky forecast overnight where gritting services could be needed as a weather front waves across Britain. Icy rain for the hills and sleet, even a bit of snow over the Scottish mountains and perhaps ice. A nippy easterly wind for eastern Britain and a chilly northerly elsewhere with the frost under the clear skies away from the front.

This frontal band is weakening but will take its time for north-eastern Britain. For most places by Saturday, it should be dry with light winds and bright spells. However, the lingering front will keep more cloud around this fading band. An easterly breeze off the North Sea will pick up through the day. This could draw in more low cloud off the sea, so the day will feel colder and become grey.

This flow off the North Sea continues into the night, making it feel cold and damp. There will be inland breaks over Wales, inland Scotland, NW England, SW England and Northern Ireland so again a frost. As the weekend progresses fog will also begin to form overnight.

Sunday is quiet and settled again with a lot of cloud. Under this high pressure, there will be occasional showers but mostly a lot of dry, chilly weather.

Sunday night looks cold with a widespread frost, very light winds and the possibility of freezing fog in places.

Outdoor activities

For those heading out for a walk, bike ride or run it will be mostly dry but cold. Any sunny spells (most likely for western Britain) will look encouraging and give a bit of direct warmth but the air remains nippy. For areas under the cloud, and certainly, in the easterly breeze, it will feel cold. For Saturday the winds will be light but there could be a fresh northeast wind developing over East Anglia, the Home Counties and London during Sunday.

For anyone off to watch an outdoor match, it will feel cold standing about. It is still only early March and this easterly air brings a coolness.

The Winter Paralympics begin this weekend in Beijing. Daytime temperatures have been around 10C with clear skies and sunshine but chilly at night and getting a bit milder next week. It is still sub-zero to the north of the capital for the other Olympic venues
