Still a snow risk on Boxing Day but milder weather is taking over

After a few places saw a White Christmas yesterday, there's more snow for parts of Northern Britain today, but milder weather will dominate beyond today, through into the New Year.

For most, it was a Green Christmas day this year, but some did at least get to see snow and record a white Christmas - with Braemar a stand out spot.

Boxing Day will bring some more for Scotland and Northern England, with some treacherous conditions likely on the roads, especially higher routes. But it's happening as milder air moves up from the southwest to cross the whole country eventually, and this is going to mean an increasingly mild but still unsettled run-up to the new year.

Today, with fronts moving northeast, bringing patchy rain, sleet and snow, it's going to be quite a messy day. Further south, once the fronts have cleared,  a trough will move west to east through the day behind, bringing some sharp rain showers with it.

Temperatures will be contrasting north to south, with Northern England northwards struggling in low-single figures whereas southern England will reach 10-12c.

This evening and overnight, the rain, sleet and snow will eventually clear away from the northeast, with only the high ground of Scotland keeping the snow to the bitter end as the milder air encroaches. It'll be dry and mild to the south, but rain will move into the southwest during the early hours of Monday as another Atlantic low pressure system approaches.

That rain will spread northeast through England and Wales during the day, perhaps making it into southern Scotland by the end. But, elsewhere in Scotland, it should be a mostly dry one.

Low pressure will then be crossing the country during Tuesday, so it'll be another unsettled, messy sort of day with showers or longer spells of rain possible just about anyway. Although, they should ease back during the afternoon.

Then, the theme continues through the remainder of the week and as we approach New Year. It'll stay mild with temperatures peaking into the teens, but there'll be frequent bands of rain or showers moving in from the Atlantic.
