Another chilly day, but milder as we head into the weekend

A cold northerly wind again today, feeding in showers towards windward coastal areas. Wind turning westerly Friday, so tomorrow and the weekend milder but with a fair bit of cloud, bringing some rain to northern parts at times.

After a warm October, November has started on a chilly note thanks to northerly winds bringing cold arctic air southwards, with cold days and frosty nights where skies have cleared overnight since the start of the week. With the cold air, the northerly wind has brought some showers too, particularly around windward northern, western and eastern coasts, but yesterday saw showers move inland across eastern areas as they tracked south. The cold notherly flow continues today, with showers continuing along windward coasts but also getting inland in places. But Friday will see winds swing round to come from a westerly direction, so it will turn milder but also cloudier for many tomorrow and remaining so over the weekend. Some rain or showers at times in the north but southern areas should stay dry and bright.

Cold arctic air replaced by milder air from the west on Friday and into the weekend:

Today

A cold morning for many after a frosty start in the north and west. Thursday will see further showers running south along eastern and western coasts, these getting inland for a time across eastern England, though showers generally tending to ease through this afternoon. Elsewhere, generally dry with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells. Thicker cloud with some patchy rain arriving across NW Scotland this afternoon. A chilly northerly wind again today, strong in the east, perhaps touching gale force for a time along coasts of East Anglia. Temperatures struggling as a result – reaching 7-9C across eastern Scotland and NE England, 10-11C elsewhere.

Tonight

Cloudy and milder across northern and western areas tonight, with outbreaks of rain across northern and western Scotland, patchy light rain or drizzle elsewhere across the northwest. Drier with clear spells across central, southern and eastern England – leading to a cold night with a frost in the south.

Friday

A change of wind direction on Friday, we lose the cold northerly and pick up a milder northwesterly or westerly flow which will bring in a lot of cloud off the Atlantic across many parts. Cloud thick enough to bring some showery rain across western Scotland, N. Ireland and NW England. Best chance of some sunshine across southern and eastern England. Feeling milder than today, temperatures reaching 11-13C.

Weekend

Mild, mostly dry but probably cloudy Friday night for those outdoors for bonfire night celebrations. Then on Saturday, a deep area of low pressure moves east close to Iceland, bringing blizzard conditions there. Across the UK, this deep low will bring a spell wet and windy weather across the north, followed by brighter conditions with blustery showers in the northwest. Southern areas mostly dry, mild, cloudy and breezy. Temperatures reaching 12-14C widely.

A windy day again on Sunday across the north, gales possible across northern Scotland early in the morning. A weak cold front clears the south in the morning, so a cloudy start with patchy light rain here before turning drier and sunnier, sunshine and showers across the north before showers ease in the afternoon. Fairly mild, temperatures reaching 11-14C.

Next week

It’s looking fairly changeable next week across the north, with low pressure to the north or northwest and a westerly flow for much of the week bringing spells of rain at times, heavy in places, but some drier and brighter interludes too. Spells of rain don’t look to linger, so hopefully no issues with flooding. Southern areas closer to high pressure to the south look to remain mostly dry, bright or sunny at times, but sometimes cloudy. Rain can’t be ruled out, but likely not much and brief. Generally mild for all parts.
