Once any early cloud burns off, today (Sunday) and bank holiday Monday will see out Meteorological Spring with plenty of warm sunshine.
It's a bank holiday, and the weather's fine, with tomorrow seeing the end of meteorological spring, one I’m sure in complete contrast to last year, most will be pleased to see the back of. But May is at least ending on a fine, much warmer note, dispelling the myth that bank holidays are usually cool and wet. So enjoy the sunshine, but please remember to 'slap on' the cream as UV levels throughout the holiday will be high, owing to the strong sunshine at this time of year.
A large anticyclone in the North Sea is responsible for the fine spell, but we have a fair amount of mist and patchy fog to get rid of first before the sun comes through.
Many eastern areas are also beginning grey and murky that'll take a little longer to clear before the cloud burns back to the coast. For most, it's then a story of a good deal of late-spring sunshine, but some cloud will build perhaps sufficiently to ‘trigger’ the odd shower over the hills of Scotland and the North in an otherwise dry day. It’ll become warm in mostly light breezes between East and South with top temperatures mostly between 18 and 23C, although sea breezes will keep North Sea coasts cooler.
A fine summery evening will be perfect for a barbecue or a pint outside at the local, although it may begin to feel just a little chilly towards dusk if you're only wearing summer clothing. Any showers over northern hills will soon fade to leave clear spells after dark in a light East or South Easterly breeze. This'll allow mist and patchy fog to form again, with areas of very low cloud off the North Sea returning to some eastern parts during the early hours to make it grey and murky again here by dawn. Although perhaps turning a little chilly in some rural valleys towards morning, most places have a relatively mild night, with the lowest temperatures mostly in the range 7 to 11C.
Early mist and patchy fog will soon disperse, with low cloud and murk in some eastern parts eventually retreating to the coast, to leave most parts with a fine bank holiday Monday. There’ll be a good deal of sunshine once more, and while this may turn somewhat hazy later, it shouldn’t spoil another lovely day too much. It stays mainly dry, but like yesterday, some cloud will build to perhaps give the odd sharp shower over hilly areas in the North, but you’ll be very unlucky if you catch one. An East or South Easterly breeze will be more noticeable in the South and along exposed coasts keeping some beaches cooler, but inland it'll become warm or very warm, with top temperatures mostly between 18 and 24C.
Meteorological spring ends with another fine, quite warm summery evening followed by a dry, largely clear night. It’ll turn misty in places again, with patchy, very low cloud likely to ‘roll-in’ off the North Sea to make some eastern areas grey and murky once more by morning. An East or South Easterly breeze will be mostly light, and while a few Highland glens could turn a little chilly for most, it’ll be another mild night, with temperatures generally falling no lower than 8 to 12C.
The fine, warm weather continues into Tuesday and the new month marking the beginning of meteorological summer, after another grey, misty start in places. By mid-week though, we're likely to see some sharp showers and a few thunderstorms moving up from South West, but the extent of these is a little uncertain at present. The remainder of the coming week then remains somewhat unsettled and a little cooler, but there'll still be a fair amount of warm sunshine at times, especially in the East and South.
