Warming up this weekend, with heat next week. Very wet for western Scotland

Plenty of fair, sometimes blustery weather this weekend. Western Scotland is in for some very wet weather but temperatures will be rising, up past 30C early next week.

Issued: 12th September 2020 09:00

Although unsettled in the North with some heavy rain and gales for a time, you'll notice it becoming steadily warmer over the weekend especially in the South where it'll stay dry. By Monday, this will have spread to much of Scotland and Northern Ireland, as a late surge of summer pushes North. This'll bring very high temperatures for mid-September, with a hot 30C possible in the South East on Monday or Tuesday.

Scotland rain

The remains of a cold front over the South East is giving a little drizzle here and there, but this will soon clear the Kent coast. England and Wales then see a dry day giving sunny spells, with just the odd blustery shower towards Cumbria. A West or South West wind will be light in the South but fresher further North, with maximum temperatures between 16 and 21C. Northern Ireland will also be fine for a while apart from a few showers towards Tyrone and Derry, before rain spreads from the West before the afternoon is out. Scotland sees a scattering of blustery showers most of them in the North and West where some will be heavy, with the best of the sunshine over Fife, Lothian and The Borders. A South West wind will be strong over Highland and the Northern Isles, with a freshening southerly over Northern Ireland later. Top temperatures here 12 to 15C.

It'll be wet evening and night over Northern Ireland, with Scotland joining in after dark. The rain will be particularly heavy over Highland and in the West where warnings of potential flooding have been issued, with up to a months average rainfall possible in some hilly areas over the weekend. It'll be less wet towards The Borders, with parts of northern England probably also seeing showers later in the night. Further South it'll stay dry, in a South or South West wind that'll freshen a little. Gales giving gusts to 45 or 50mph are likely over the North and West of Scotland in a milder night when temperatures generally shouldn't fall below 10 to 15C.

Scotland heavy rain warning flooding
After a wet start over Northern Ireland, Sunday sees the weather improving from the South, with Down and Armagh perhaps seeing the sun to come through later. Southern Scotland and the Central Lowlands should also see an improvement, while further North and West it remains dull, wet and windy. Meanwhile, over England and Wales, it's finer with increasing amounts of sunshine, especially in the South. Here a South or South Westerly wind will be fairly light in quite humid conditions, that'll allow temperatures to reach 19 to 23C and maybe 24 or 25C across the South East. It'also be turning milder over Scotland and Northern Ireland despite a blustery South West wind, with top temperatures here 14 to 18C.

Heat UK 30c
The far North West stays cloudy into the evening and after dark and as winds decrease a little it'll turn misty generally with occasional mostly light rain or drizzle. Other western areas may also see it turning cloudy and misty, while central and eastern parts have clear spells. It'll be a very mild night everywhere though In a South West or southerly breeze, with temperatures unlikely to fall below 11 to 16C.
