Settling down over the bank holiday weekend, windy with rain in the east at first

Strong northerly wind for eastern England today, bringing some showery rain, otherwise settling down and mostly dry this weekend, as high pressure builds in, cool for late August.

Friday brought its fair share of wet weather, especially over England and Wales, after a week that saw plenty of rain for many. There were a rash of thundery downpours across southern Britain, with some of the shower clouds producing waterspouts over the sea, like the one below seen off the coast of Southwold in Suffolk early afternoon.

The good news is that it will dry up over the weekend, but it will be a cool and windy start to the Bank holiday, with gales for a time towards eastern coasts today. It's all thanks to low pressure close to east pulling down brisk northerly winds, which will feed in some showery rain for eastern England. But as the low eases away to the east and high pressure builds in from the west, it will become drier and sunnier elsewhere. A ridge of high pressure will then establish itself through Sunday and linger into Bank Holiday Monday. So the brisk northerly winds in the east will ease and for most, it will remain dry and settled with sunny spells by day, but it will remain cool for late August and with clear spells overnight, it will turn rather chilly, especially Sunday night.

Today

For now, low pressure lurking close to the east coast of England and high pressure building to the west will bring tightly packed isobars towards the east today. A strong northerly wind will gust 40-50mph throughout Saturday in eastern counties of England, bringing rough seas on North Seas coasts, while blowing in cloudy skies with occasional showers this morning then thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain will move down off the North Sea across East Anglia and SE England later.

Elsewhere, a breezy afternoon with sunny spells and scattered light showers in places. Feeling on the cool side, temperatures reaching 13-15C across Scotland and Northern Ireland, 15-18C across England and Wales, highest temperatures towards the southwest. Temperatures pegged back to 13-15C along North Sea coasts of England with the strong wind.

Tonight

Thicker cloud and patchy rain affecting East Anglia and SE England this evening and overnight, accompanied by a brisk northerly wind. But elsewhere a generally dry night with clear spells and winds easing, though some light showers are possible near coasts. A rather chilly night, with temperatures falling into single figures in rural areas.

Sunday

Sunday will see a few showers at first across the far southeast, before easing through the morning, but generally a dry day with sunny spells otherwise. Just the odd light shower perhaps near coasts. With winds easing, it will feel a little warmer than Saturday too.

Bank Holiday Monday

Bank Holiday Monday will start chilly but bright, temperatures in low single figures at dawn in rural northern and western areas, perhaps.a ground frost in some sheltered Scottish Glens. Some those camping be prepared to wrap up warm Sunday night! But with high pressure in control, a generally dry and fine Monday, with sunny spells. With light winds, feeling a little warmer than the weekend too. Particularly in the southeast.

Rest of the week

After a bright start in the east, an occluded front will move east on Tuesday, bringing cloudier skies, along with a spell of rain across northern and western areas in the morning, rain lighter and more patchy or showery as it reaches the east of England later.

Further cloud and rain look likely for northern and western areas on Wednesday along with strengthening southwesterly winds. Drier and brighter in the south and east. Cloud and patchy rain eventually sliding southeast over southern areas Thursday, brighter but with showers further north. Cloudy with perhaps further rain returning across the south on Friday, but brighter in the north. Temperatures edging up though through the week, reaching the low twenties in the south.
