Rain at times and fresher this weekend, but heat building next week

The weather is turning fresher with some rain around for many today and again over the weekend, but some dry sunny spells too. Turning hotter from the south next week, with 30C possible Wednesday.

Thursday turned out to be a particularly wet day across parts of England and Wales, as a persistent area of rain spread west. St Athan in South Wales racked up 50mm of rain in 24 hours. Across the south coast, there were some sharp showers, which even produced a waterspout over the Solent on the Hampshire coast.

The same area of rain that moved west yesterday will move back north across England and Wales this morning, turning potentially heavy and thundery across northern England and Scotland later this morning and into the afternoon. Drier and sunnier conditions following from the south later, then most parts will stay dry with sunny spells on Saturday, though a few showers are likely in places. A band of heavy rain will move east across all parts early Sunday followed by a mostly dry and sunny day in the south, heavy showers for the north. Northern and western areas look like being plagued by cloud and showery rain at times next week, but in the south and east it will hot up, with sunshine lifting temperatures to around 30C by the middle of the week.

30c on Wednesday?

Today

For now, a grey start and damp across much of Wales, central and southern England with outbreaks of rain spreading northeast this morning. After a dry and sunny start across East Anglia and northern England, thickening cloud and outbreaks of rain arriving from the southwest here too this morning. Some brightness for the Southern Uplands southwards but cloudier from the Central Belt northwards, with outbreaks of rain spreading west across the Highlands for a time.

Into the afternoon, drying up from the south across southern areas of Wales and England, as the morning showery rain here edges north across north Wales into northern England, N. Ireland and eventually southern Scotland, where it will turn heavy and perhaps thundery. After morning cloud and rain clears west, much of Scotland dry and sunny north of the central belt, though heavy and perhaps thundery showers arriving in the south spreading across the central belt by this evening. Temperatures this afternoon reaching 17-21C.

Tonight

Scattered showers, heavy and thundery for a time, spreading north across western Scotland this evening while clearing from the south across northern England and southern Scotland. These eventually clearing overnight, otherwise most areas becoming dry with clear spells, though the odd shower can’t be ruled out in the west.

Weekend

Sunny spells for many on Saturday and, although many will stay dry, some scattered mainly light showers are possible spreading northeast in the southwesterly breeze. A band of heavy rain and strengthening winds arriving across Ireland and N. Ireland early evening reaching Wales and western fringes of England and Scotland by midnight. Temperatures reaching 18-22C generally.

A band of heavy rain and strong winds clearing east across all parts in the early hours of Sunday, though perhaps lingering for a time across the far north of Scotland. Following the rain first thing will be sunny spells but also scattered blustery heavy and perhaps thundery showers across Scotland, N. Ireland and NW England. A few lighter showers for Wales and perhaps elsewhere over England, but central, southern and eastern England likely escaping with a dry and sunny day. Fresher and breezier everywhere, temperatures reaching 18-22C.

Next week

Monday’s looking mostly fine and sunny for central, southern and eastern England, but with a fresh southwesterly wind, cloud and rain spreading in across northern and western areas, strong winds in the northwest. Band of cloud and rain fizzling out across central areas on Tuesday, mostly fine, dry and sunny either side. Becoming quite warm across eastern England, temperatures reaching 24-27C here. On Wednesday, Scotland is looking cloudier with a risk of heavy and thundery showers, but much of England and Wales dry, warm and sunny, hot across eastern England, perhaps reaching 30C. Thursday could be equally as hot and sunny in the southeast, sunny and less hot elsewhere away from Scotland where it may be cooler and cloudier with chance of showers. Perhaps less hot in the southeast and a greater chance of showers on Friday.
