Finally, winds becoming lighter - just in time for the Bank Holiday

Pressure is on the rise, with winds becoming lighter and the last of the rain petering out today. Bank Holiday Monday is the set to be fine, sunny and warm for much of the UK.

With pressure on the rise, winds won't be quite so strong as yesterday, but it will still be quite blustery for a while before winds decrease further towards evening. By tomorrow it'll be turning warmer again in lighter breezes, ending the Bank Holiday on a fine note.

This morning we have a lot of cloud across the country giving patchy rain across the Northern Isles, Northern Ireland, the South and West of Scotland, the North of England, Norfolk, the North Midlands and parts of Wales. Much of it is light and will largely peter-out through the day as skies brighten to let the sun come through, especially in the South, where it's already quite bright. Across the East of Scotland, it's a fine, sunny start and while some cloud will build to give the odd shower towards Moray, together with the rest of the country here too, it'll be mostly dry.

A less boisterous West wind will still be quite fresh giving gusts to gale force in the North and West, before decreasing towards evening especially over England and Wales. Despite the wind temperatures except in the far North will be somewhat above average for late May, reaching 11 to 16C in the North, 17 to 20C more generally and 21 or 22C in the South.

Lighter winds this evening

As pressure continues to build during the evening and overnight, things will settle down. This'll leave clearing skies, with any showers confined to the far North. With a West or South Westerly breeze much lighter, a few mist patches could form over rural parts of Wales and central southern England, but any around dawn will be short-lived. Patchy sea fog could also come ashore along coasts of Cornwall and Devon, with temperatures across the country generally not falling below 7 to 11C.

Bank Holiday Monday brings the return of fine weather to much of the country, in lighter breezes. There'll be lots of sunshine, but some patchy cloud may 'bubble-up' later. It becomes warm even very warm in the East and South with top temperatures 19 to 24C, locally 25 or 26C around London. Through the afternoon though Tyrone, Fermanagh, the Western Isles and the far West of Scotland turn cloudy in a freshening southerly wind perhaps with some rain later. As a result, it'll be cooler here where together with the Northern Isles, temperatures get no higher than 13 to 16C.

Temperatures on Bank Holiday Monday

Scotland, Northern Ireland and probably Cumbria become cloudy and misty after dark in a southerly breeze, with patchy rain moving in as Atlantic systems approach. But for much of England and Wales, a summery evening is followed by a fine, dry night. Light winds may allow a few mist or fog patches to form in rural areas towards dawn, but any will be short-lived quickly clearing after sunrise. It'll be a mild night, with temperatures across the country generally falling no lower than 8 to 13C.

With a large anticyclone dominating, the rest of the week looks mostly fine and dry. There may be variable amounts of cloud for a time, but with increasing amounts of sunshine through the period, it'll become very warm or hot and humid in light winds.
