More rain and heavy showers. An unsettled picture if you are Camping at Home this week.

The last week of April has brought showers finally after a very sunny and dry month. With #CampatHome events taking place it looks nippy by night and as the showers come and go.

Issued: 29th April 2020 09:29

More of the UK will see rain today as bands of heavier rain move up from the SW with plenty of cloud and it will be a cool feeling day. Northern Scotland starts clear and cold with sunshine, there has been frost here overnight.

Netweather Radar

As a collection of low pressures head our way from the Atlantic there is already a lot of low cloud and drizzle around. Heavier frontal rain is already over southern Ireland, Cornwall and Devon working its way towards southern Wales. This band will be over Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and NW England by lunchtime after wet and blustery conditions move across Wales. Also extending over the Midlands and more patchy over Greater London. Ahead of this, it is cloud for all but northern Scotland and behind this frontal band there will be breaks in the cloud, some sunshine and temperatures lifting to 14C.

Another distinct band of rain will move in from the SW by this evening. This will be more showery, with heavy bursts even thunder. The middle of the week will be more unsettled as low pressure moves right over the UK

The low centre moving past the south of Ireland looks to have some strong winds around it with gusty winds for SW England this evening and for Pembrokeshire and the Bristol Channel tonight. The line of heavier showers moves east over southern Britani and clips Northern Ireland, particularly Co. Down tonight. The earlier band of rain will still be heading northwards over Scotland and there will be snow over the mountains tonight as it hits the colder air.

Wet and windy tonight for western Wales. The showery rain rotates around over the UK leaving a mixed breezy start for Thursday. There will be bright spells and glimpses of sunshine in cloud breaks with a scattering of showers throughout the day. Clusters of heavier showers will move through the English Channel over SW Britain by lunchtime with more showers for Wales and England in the afternoon. The far north of England could be drier with a lingering band of showery rain near the Central Belt of Scotland and more showers for Northern Ireland. Again, there will be the risks of thunder and lightning. Your weather app will probably show showers all day. That is a risk of a downpour at any point. The showers will come and go, some areas seeing plenty with heavy ones, other areas just the odd one in the day.

The temperature on Thursday will be around 11 or 12C, still feeling cool although London could see 15C.

Surface pressure UK Atlantic

With a high over Greenland and another over the Baltic States the UK low struggles to move on keeping the showers going.

This week there are lots of Camp at Home events, many run by Scouts or Guides. After weeks of fine, dry and sunny weather it’s a bit of a shame that the weather has turned but a bit of rain never hurt anyone, did it. Remember your woolly hat if you are camping outside at home this week.

By Thursday evening the heaviest daytime showers will be fading but there will still be showers about. Wales, the Midlands across to the Wash looks most prone at the moment. Cornwall will have a brisk westerly wind but mostly the winds will be light, and it will feel cool with the slight dampness in the air. Around 8C in the evening, for virtual campfires and quite chilly overnight, down to 2 or 3C in places.

There will still be a few showers about by Friday morning with the low pressure near to NE Scotland bringing early rain to the Moray coast. Could be a better forecast but could be worse, it will be nippy overnight.

The mixed outlook continues although daytime temperatures recover a bit, getting up to 16 or 17C at the weekend with more sunshine but still the risk of showers.
