Spring-Like weather where the sun breaks through

Temperatures into the teens in places will make for a spring-like feeling during the next couple of days.

Issued: 29th December 2019 09:12

The thing you'll notice about today especially over Scotland and Northern Ireland is that it's unusually mild. The thermometer overnight in the West didn't fall below 12C in places, but you'll notice it turning somewhat colder here tomorrow with temperatures closer to the seasonal norm. It's also mainly dry, great news for the many arable farmers desperate to get back on to previously flooded fields. And with pressure expected to remain high into the New Year, the weather should continue mainly dry.

The only wet weather today will be towards Highland where brushing Atlantic systems will bring occasional rain accompanied by a strong and gusty southerly wind. Elsewhere it stays dry with a mixture of grey, misty weather and sunny spells. While some places will remain cloudy and murky, there's a better chance of seeing the sun come through today. Where it brightens up, and you have shelter it'll become exceptionally mild, with parts of North Wales, Moray and Aberdeenshire perhaps seeing temperature as high as 15 or 16C. But where you keep the cloud over parts of eastern England a less mild 10 or 11C is more likely.

Temperatures on Sunday - very mild in places

After dark parts of Northern Ireland, northern and maybe central Scotland see showers, with clearer weather and somewhat lighter breezes moving into the far north overnight. Southern Scotland, England and Wales remain mostly dry, with a continued mix of cloud and clear spells. It turns misty in places with patchy fog mainly forming in the South and East where a South West or southerly wind will be light. While it could turn cold enough around The Wash for a touch of grass frost where skies stay clear, for most it'll be a mild night, with lowest temperatures mostly between 4 and 9C.

Monday continues mild and dry over England and Wales, after a grey, misty start in places. Patchy fog may only lift into low cloud, however keeping some parts grey and murky, while others see some sunshine. Meanwhile, a weakening front over Northern Ireland and southern Scotland gives a few showers, but with brighter spells also. Central Scotland should see sunny spells, while the Northern Isles, Highland, Caithness and Moray could also see a few showers where temperatures will have returned to near normal in a fresh Westerly wind. Over England and Wales, though 10 to 13C locally, 14C could feel positively spring-like where the sun comes through in a mostly light or moderate South Westerly breeze.

Much of Scotland and probably Northern Ireland see clearing skies after dark. Lighter breezes may allow mist, patchy fog and a touch of frost to form in some sheltered northern glens, with lowest temperatures probably close to freezing. Over England and Wales, it turns misty generally, with patchy fog forming again in a mixed evening and night. Most places should be dry, but a few showers in the North and perhaps also across South Wales and the South West cannot entirely be ruled out. Temperatures here though shouldn't fall below 4 to 8C.
