Late Summer Sunshine Bringing Rising Temperatures, 30c Possible Monday

The sunny weather continues as temperatures rise through the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend.

Issued: 27th August 2017 09:08

Temperatures reached 26C on Saturday at Gravesend, with some other locations, across southern England, reaching 25C. And they're set to rise over the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend. A lot of dry weather will also continue in England and Wales, but with some rain and showers developing across parts of the north and west of the British Isles.

Today

Through the remainder of Sunday and this north and west, south and east split in conditions will develop. Across Scotland, Ireland and, to a lesser extent, across parts of N England, it will be rather cloudy. Some patchy light rain or drizzle is possible too, primarily in some areas of W Scotland and Ireland. Some brighter intervals will develop to the east of high ground, so across parts of E Scotland and NE England. The best of the weather though will continue to be across more central and southern areas of England and Wales. As was the case on Saturday, there’ll be plenty of sunshine here, with just scattered fair weather cumulus clouds.

After a locally chilly start to the day, temperatures will soon rise, and maximum temperatures will reach 19C to 24C quite widely across England and Wales this afternoon. However, temperatures may once again reach 25C or 26C more locally across parts of southern and south-eastern areas of England. Given more cloud across northern and western areas then it will be cooler here.

Overnight tonight and it will turn wetter and windier across parts of Scotland and, later, N Ireland as a weather front begins to arrive from the west. Across Much of England and Wales though after an enjoyable evening, it will be a dry night with clear spells and variable cloud. A mild night ahead too for many areas of the British Isles.

Bank Holiday Monday

So, on into Monday and there will be a lot of dry and sunny weather across England and Wales, especially across central and southern areas. The weather front across parts of Scotland and Ireland will be particularly slow moving, but it will attempt to move southeastwards through the day. As a result, the north and west, south and east divide in the weather will continue. Much of Scotland will have a cloudy day with some rain and drizzle at times, similar conditions across Ireland too and it will be turning cooler here through the day. N England should just about escape with a dry day, along with some spells of sunshine.

For the rest of England and Wales then it’s a case of getting the drinks in the fridge and firing up the BBQ. As the dry weather persists throughout the day, along with some prolonged spells of warm, if not hot late August sunshine.

Temperatures will be falling across parts of the north and west during the day, as cooler weather moves in off the Atlantic. Ahead of this, for much of England and Wales, temperatures will peak near 26C to 28C. There’s a low risk of temperatures nearing 30C somewhere around the Greater London area. It’s most certainly been some weeks since temperatures have been this high.

The wet weather across parts of the north and west will continue to move south-eastwards on Monday night, but with most of the rain fizzling out. However, and importantly, cooler air will filter southwards to all areas to bring about a much cooler day as we move into Tuesday. High pressure is still expected to be a dominant feature though, especially in England and Wales. So if you’re heading back to work on Tuesday then at least it’ll be a dry day for many, perhaps with some showers across Scotland.

Looking further ahead and while some wet weather may well develop on Wednesday, for some areas. It is the high pressure that is set to be the dominant feature of the weather. Perhaps except for some rain or showers on Wednesday, the rest of the week is likely to be predominantly dry. There'll be some bright or sunny spells by day, so pleasant in the sunshine, but with some chilly nights. Perhaps with the first signs that autumn is around the corner, with mist and fog patches possible.
