Staying Changeable, But Feeling Warm In The Sun

Updated: 15th August 2017 09:19

Monday was a thoroughly wet day across parts of western Britain, while across SE England basked in warm sunshine which lifted the temperature to 25C at Gravesend, Kent – making it the warmest day of August 2017 so far.

Overnight rain, thundery in places, has cleared away for most to be replaced by sunshine and showers for Tuesday. Wednesday sees a dry and bright start, before wind and rain arrives in the west later, the rain spreading east across all areas Wednesday night before clearing  to sunshine and showers for Thursday and Friday. It will feel warm in the sunshine over the next few days, temperatures perhaps reaching the mid twenties across SE Britain, high teens to low twenties elsewhere. Turning cooler on Friday and into the weekend, as it turns windier from the west.

Today

For now, overnight rain is clearing NE Scotland and also thundery rain affecting SE England in the small hours is now clearing Kent to leave a mostly dry, fine and sunny morning.

Rain clearing far NE and far SE UK, showers in the northwest becoming more widespread in the north and east

There are some scattered showers around across Scotland and NW England and through the morning cloud will build to bring scattered showers elsewhere too, initially across the north and northwest this morning, before the bulk of the showers affect northern and eastern areas in the afternoon – where they will turn heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. Wales and western parts of England staying mostly dry and sunny into the afternoon, as ridge of high pressure builds-in across the west, though the odd rogue light shower can’t be ruled out.

Feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine, temperatures highest across SE England and East Anglia – where they will reach 22-24C, elsewhere we are looking at highs of 17-20C.

Tonight

Showers fading this evening and overnight to bring a mostly dry night with clear spells, which will mean it will turn chilly in rural northern areas. It will turn increasingly cloudy across the west, with rain arriving across Ireland and N. Ireland by dawn.

Wednesday

Today will be a case of making the most of the morning sunshine in western areas, as cloud will thicken late morning and through the afternoon – with outbreaks of rain developing from the west across Scotland, NW England, N. Ireland, Wales and SW England, accompanied by a strengthening wind. Areas further east staying most and bright or sunny. Temperatures reaching 20-22C across eastern England in the sunshine, 16-19C across the cloudy parts of the north and west.

Rain arriving across the north and west on Wednesday

Thursday

Rain across the west on Wednesday will spread across eastern England on Wednesday night, before clearing eastern England by late morning on Thursday. Otherwise, most areas will see sunshine and showers, locally heavy with thunder in the west. Quite warm across England and Wales, reaching 21-24C, Scotland and N. Ireland reaching 16-19C.

Friday

Heavy rain and strong winds will arrive across Scotland , N. Ireland and far north of England Thursday night with an area of low pressure crossing northern Britain, this wind and rain clearing east Friday morning to sunshine and squally showers, though rain may linger across the Northern Isles. The rest of England and Wales will be dry, bright and breezy. Cooler on Friday, temperatures reaching 15-17C in the north, 17-21C in the south.

Weekend

A north-south split looks on the cards for the weekend. Southern areas staying mostly dry throughout with some good sunny spells by day towards the south and southeast of England. Northern England northwards seeing sunshine and showers during Saturday morning, fading in the afternoon as cloud thickens from the west, heralding rain, locally heavy, and strengthening winds spreading east on Sunday.
