Rain across the north and west today, drier towards the southeast. Sunshine and showers or longer spells of rain for rest of the week, warm at first but cooler later in the week.
After a mostly fine weekend, with the novelty of high pressure in control, we return to the more familiar story of spells of rain alternating with sunshine and showers, as low pressure systems and their fronts return to the scene. Monday sees cloud and rain return to northern and western areas, this rain reaching eastern areas tonight before clearing on Tuesday to sunshine and showers. Rinse and repeat of rain returning later on Wednesday followed by sunshine and showers on Thursday and Friday. The upside, is it will feel warm in the sunshine over the next few days, reaching 23-25C in the southeast, though it will tend to turn cooler later in the week.
For now, we start Monday morning with a wet picture across Scotland, NW England, Wales, west Midlands and SW England, while further east we start off with some sunshine across SE England and East Anglia and here we will likely cling on to dry and sunny weather for much of the day. The cloud is thickening across the east Midlands, Lincolnshire and NE England and will join many northern and western areas to a cloudy and damp day with showery outbreaks of rain, which will be locally heavy across the west. The rain is already clearing across N Ireland and west Wales though and here we will see a mixture of sunny spells and heavy thundery showers.
In the sunny spells across SE England and England, like yesterday, we could reach 22-24C, elsewhere reaching 16-20C. Winds will be light, so feeling pleasant in the sun, though temperatures will be rather disappointing for mid-August - where we see the cloud and rain.
The weather front bringing the cloud and rain across the north and west today will continue to edge slowly east tonight into Tuesday morning, waves running along the cold front will bring some heavy and thundery pulses of rain across Wales and northern England for a time, before clearing away northeastwards to showers across many northern and western areas, which will also be locally heavy and thundery. SE England and East Anglia staying mostly dry through the night.
Then for Tuesday, it's a case of sunny spells and scattered showers, some of which will be heavy and thundery - especially across northern and eastern areas, though some southern and western areas may become dry and sunny after some showers in the morning. In the sunny spells, feeling pleasant, especially across SE England and East Anglia, where temperatures will reach 23-24C, elsewhere temperatures reaching 17-20C.
As we head into Wednesday, a brief ridge of high pressure builds, bringing a mostly dry and fine morning, it will remain dry and sunny into the afternoon across southern, central and eastern England, but across Scotland, N. Ireland, NW England and west Wales it will cloud over with outbreaks of rain and strengthening winds spread in from the west as the next low pressure waiting in the wings begins to move in.
Wet and windy on Wednesday night for many, rain lingering across the east on Thursday morning before clearing by lunchtime and becoming dry and sunny through the afternoon, while western areas see sunny spells and scattered showers. Friday sees a mixture of sunshine and showers across most areas, locally heavy with thunder, showers perhaps merging into longer spells of rain across the north and northwest. Temperatures cool for the time of year.
