October holidays - Half term weather

Many schools in England and Wales will have half term holidays next week, a rest before the run up to Christmas. The first half of October was fine and settled but what does the last week have in store?

October holidays - Half term weather

Issued: 22nd October 2015 10:17

Currently the weekend of 24/25th sees a spell of rain on Saturday but drier and brighter weather on Sunday, although it will feel colder by then. The clocks change on Saturday night so remind all small children that everyone is due an extra hour in bed, quiet lie-ins are compulsory. Good luck with that.

The weather doesn’t look great for the start of the week. A deep area of low pressure has been showing up on the Atlantic charts. This looks set to bring wet and windy weather to England and Wales Monday into Tuesday. Eastern and central England could keep Sunday’s fine weather well into Monday before the Atlantic rain band arrives. This low could deepen enough to bring very strong winds to SW Britain so just something to keep any eye on, in the weekend’s forecasts

Image shows deep low in Atlantic for Sunday midday (from GFS model) heading towards UK. High pressure over southeast Britain will bring some fine weather on Sun 25th but Low will take over.

Really throughout the week, the flow is from a mild-ish SW direction, which means temperatures by day of 12 to 16C and by night not too cold. It will stay breezy or windy for western parts as further bands of showers and rain marches in over Wales, SW and NW England. Central areas will see some showers but eastern England will do better in this flow with longer dry, bright spells and more fair weather.

Temperatures - Not overly cold but still late October. Jumper and fingerless gloves, but not quite full hat, scarf and mittens

Winds - Mostly from SW, off Irish Sea and Western Channel. Often blustery

Rain or Sun -  West= more unsettled, put your raincoats on. East = more sheltered, put raincoats/umbrellas in your bag

Halloween weekend – more of the same. Breezy, bit cooler and still spells of rain, more for Wales and W.England
