It's raining, it's pouring. The middle of August has thrown some very wet weather over Britain but with the weekend nearly upon us, can there be any more rain?
Friday 14th August 2015
Parts of Britain saw a months’ worth of rain yesterday and it’s raining again today. Thunderstorms hit southern England and East Anglia with reports of flooding in Brighton, Eastbourne and London. It is now a band of heavy and persistent rain that is washing out Friday but there is some good news. Herstmonceux in E.Sussex had the highest recorded rainfall at 35.4mm but away from the rain gauges would have seen double that in the thundery downpours.
Goodbye heavy, thundery rain
Once the rainband clear soff into the North Sea, taking it's time from NE Scotland, high pressure will begin to build. That means more settled, often drier weather. The westerly flow off the Atlantic on Saturday will bring some showers, mainly to western Britain and a few to N.Ireland but for most it will be brigh and dry with sunny spells. Much better than the rain on Friday
It will be quite cool by night if you are off camping, with light winds so mist and murky first thing. Daytime temperatures will be pleasant in SE Britain on Saturday at 19 to 21C and feeling more comfortable as the muggy humid air will be away. The rest of the UK will be on the cool side for Saturday but a bit warmer for Sunday with hardly any breeze. Widely in the mid to high teens. Not the height of summer but not bad.
Further ahead
Next week start with the high still bringing settled weather and there are hints of temperatures creeping upwards midweek. My local schools go back in Lothian on Wednesday; no wonder the weather looks warmer. Jo Farrow
