Really cold here, a strong breeze from the SSE, just 15C here. 7-8C warmer inland.

23c here today. Looks quite cloudy and gusty down your way? Just the warm up for the storms later! Hoping we get hit tonight too. You could be on for 2 humdingers in a few days!

I see we hit 27C down south yesterday so that mark is crossed. When was the last June not to hit 30C as our next goal.

Hmm, an interesting "Will it, OR Won't it?", the European summer outlook care of AccuWeather. The part about the Italian "Operation Thermostat", holds interest, when will it be invoked in the UK?

For the UK, potential for temperature records to fall during hot spells.  Something which has been fairly common since 2015, even during otherwise mediocre summers.  Another forecast going for a potentially front loaded season, too.

Another magnificent forecast. This morning on BBC 5 live it said the rain southern England up to the wash and the SE. Rain radar shows the SE and E is dry and the heavy rain is Wales, West Midlands (again) and bits of the NW.  How can they get it so wrong?

A common theme of recent summers, 2019 a great example, shortlived heat plumes, air from N Africa, before atlantic trough breaks through. Not a fan of such synoptics really, just bring intense humidity and often cloudy hazy skies before heavy thundery downpours, but I guess they prevent drought conditions at least or sustained heatwaves which again I'm not a fan of. My ideal summer are spells of high pressure and mid 20s max lasting 7-10 days punctuated by shortlived wetter cooler atlantic conditions.

2020 was similar in some ways too, on the last day of July and the second week of August.  Can't stand these synoptics but at least like you say, they tend to be short lived!  I agree, mid 20's maxes would be great giving pleasant days and comfortable nights!

Virtually all stations are below average on sunshine for this stage of the month.

Very unusual to have a May with below average sunshine yet temperatures well above average. Polar opposite of April 2021.

No, 21c was right, i have very low tolerance to heat. Comes from my job. Its great in the Winter, no heating bills but Summer i get clobbered with the a/c cost!.  I have 2 fans on year round in bedroom, with windows very very rarely closed.

I would have thought being in a job with such hot humid conditions would have increased your tolerance to heat, not lowered it. A bit like how people who live in hot or cold countries get used to it.

Hi teens or low 20’s is my preference for summer, I still find mid 20’s too hot really. Which considering the average high in July is around 20°C here is ideal for me.

I hate warm nights in summer, the cooler the better, single digit minima is ideal.

Problem I've noticed is the sun. If it's a completely sunny day with no cloud then even in low 20s it can really heat upstairs and take an age to cool down especially if the bedroom is south or west facing and that's even if the night's end up cool as the night's are just too short now before the sun is up again. It's just not cool for long enough to put a dent in the day time solar heating. It's not so bad if it's been like the last few days with cloud mixed in as it's been hovering around 21-22C here upstairs today which is fine but ideally still prefer about 18-19C for a good rest. During that full week of hot weather last July it was 28-29C upstairs some nights, far too uncomfortable for me, some people may like that tropical feel but the duvet was well and truly retired to the wardrobe.

Whilst I have been happy with this spring for the most part, I must admit that I am a little disappointed with the way May is panning out. Temps have been pleasant and many areas have had some welcome rainfall, but it has been pointlesly cloudy a lot of the time when it was dry.

It reminds me of last August. Pleasant temps but cloudy a lot of the time.

I don't at all mind it being cloudy if it is raining, but if it's going to be dry then what's the point?

High teens to low 20's are fine in the sun with no wind, but when clouds pass over and a breeze picks up, it feels rather chilly, whereas mid 20's strikes the right balance in my view being pleasantly warm and not uncomfortable either way.

Yet another exaggerated southwesterly season (compared to climatology) across Europe,  it seems. Not good. Would like to see less extreme temperatures in southern Europe, in all honesty.

The ideal summer synoptics I think would be an E-ly or NE-ly across Europe. Lower pressure in southern Europe, so less-hot temps and drought-relieving storms, and dry, fine but not overly hot weather across northern and western Europe, providing some relief from the rainy gloom typical of much of autumn and winter, and providing storm possibilities when the low pressure over southern Europe extends northwards at times.

Admittedly not a terrible outlook for southern England. A fine June wouldn't be overly surprising (as we have had fine Junes in recent years) but reading between the lines one might then expect a cloudy July (doubtless with silly 37C heatwave lasting two days) and typically unsettled August.

And those silly heatwaves with two days of 37C in the middle of four weeks of 19C and cloudy are about as much use as a chocolate teapot. Let's have more in the way of stable anticyclonic weather with occasional thundery interludes, and 25C maxima, instead. Would be quite happy to see a sunny summer with the max temp never dropping below 20C... but never exceeding 30C.

I think I'd have enjoyed the summer of 1955 if I had been alive then.

A lot have pulled this trick recently, 2015 seems to have been the first summer which showed this pattern (mostly cloudy and unsettled but short lived heat spikes). Really hoping this doesn't become the new norm, I do dislike summers like that.

Not sure if it's me but I get the impression there's a subtle difference between the mostly unsettled summers from 2015-21 (2018 excepted) and the mostly unsettled summers from 2007-12. The 2007-12 summers seemed to have more in the way of overall cool weather (cool by day and by night, compared to the cool day, warm night combination of recent years) and very few extreme short lived heatwaves. There seemed to be more NW-ly types in 2007-12 while perhaps 2015-21 has been more SWly?

It’s all about location today. Crystal clear skies to my south giving us a lovely sunny day so far, looking north lots of Cu buildup inland.

Yeah, I'm unfortunately in the part getting all the boring gigantic clouds lol. As is still the case for me this month, I have had zero luck in May on my days off.
