Had about 20 minutes of sunshine with the temp responding accordingly. Now 100% cloud again with a cool wind. Feeling Autumnal.

This is partly down to latitude - Edmonton is 2 degrees further north than London is....so in the middle of summer they have extra daylight hours available.
It's also in a continental climate zone rather than oceanic like the UK, so less influenced by the seas like the UK is. We just get more cloud and rain due to this.
(455mm vs 615mm for rainfall comparison)

Also worth noting that Edmonton is 2000ft above sea level....compared to 40ft for London!

statically speaking the summer months are wetter in Edmonton than London by quite a bit...over 70% of the annual rainfall here falls between May - Sept..and of course its tipping it down here again today and stays unsettled through the weekend..but in typical La Nina fashion it looks as though it will start to dry out and warm up next week right on cue (most La Nina years here the first half of summer is wet and cool ..second half dry and warm)

Hoping this cloud clears late afternoon, yet again France has clear blue skies....It's happened so much this summer, at least share the cloud over there too.

Anyone know why we are full of cloud and they have clear blue skies, we are a similar location?!

Wet all morning. Brighter this afternoon with moderate winds.

More rain forecast for later this week.

21°C and mainly cloudy again in west London, . Heading home tonight with any luck, Prague will be getting a cool and unsettled few days, but looking sunnier and warmer next week

I think the cloud amounts over London and the south must be a side affect of the strong sunshine causing more evaporation across the Eastern Atlantic.

It is hard to believe but Sydney,Australia is actually on a par with Manchester for  average rainfall.

We are an island so our climate is much more influenced by the Atlantic and surrounding sea which generates a lot of cloud.

Yes Manchester is actually not that wet despite the reputation. Excessive cloud/lack of sunshine is more of a problem for Manchester summers.

And even though the annual rainfall isn’t that high, that rainfall is spread over a large amount of days (around 150 a year, so almost half the days have some rain at some point during the day) so they get a lot of overcast, damp and drizzly days.

It’s been a better day today here, cloudy morning but plenty of sunshine in the afternoon and evening. Temp still nothing to write home about at around 16 or 17C.

It definitely depends on location in Greater Manchester. The airport is the "official" site of average rainfall for the city but down there is more or less Cheshire and in a drier spot. Places like Oldham, Rochdale, Tameside are all far wetter, Bolton and Bury not far behind. Basically the further north and east you go in the city the average rainfall increases.

Aye, I think the Met Office was expecting more in the way of cloud breaks? Meanwhile a gloomy sky and 22C seems to be our lot for today.

Same here until 5 minutes ago. Temps 3c below expectations, cloud spoiled the day. It's only now breaking up from west, it's still early enough for the temps to hit the predicted values now it's sunnier, just not as early as the met office anticipated.

Another day ruined by pointless cloud. If it was raining or thundering, it wouldn’t be so bad but it’s just more Atlantic gunk that typically spoils 300 days a year.
Some cloud here in Prague but quite well broken and feeling lovely in the sunshine at 23°C.

Yes, there is a world of difference in perception if 800mm annual rainfall has a significant percentage falling from deep convection, compared to if it predominantly falls from light to moderate rain from frontal systems which take hours to pass through.

Not pointless, a nice example of orographic wave clouds being generated by the Scottish highlands.

Another dreadful Autumnal day here.  Thick cloud, drizzle and gusty winds.

Only 3 days out of 36 so far could be called Summer.

Forecasts have been poor again. We have suffered dull skies and rain for the last 3 days. I guess it’s because we are on higher ground

Sounds interesting and nice to see at other times of the year, but I’ll always prefer clearer skies in summer (unless it’s thundery/convective/plumey)

Glorious summers evening. Gloomy, drizzle, breezy, fog over hills and 16C. Might get the barbie out!

July 1990 started around about 10th/11th. Superb after for August and September.  Here is hoping!

July 89 was a great month that brought sustained warmth and this lasted through August and into September as well.

2013 was a great example of the best summer weather happening in the core king summer month.

July 2006 possibly best example of a super summer month.
