It's November, and time for the yearly thread dedicated to predicting and recording lowest minima of the upcoming season.

I never have the stats to hand, but last winter brought coldest minima since December 2010 I think? or was it January 2010. I think Altnaharra dropped down to -22 degrees. Correct me if I'm wrong, not sure date. Please can someone post details.

Please use this thread to record your lowest mins, and predicitions for lowest min.

I'll predict a low of -18 degrees in Altnaharra.

Cold winters have a knack of coming in pairs, because conditions that facilitate them run over 18 months or more.
Warm and dry (or wet) summers have this tendency too

Thanks. Notably low! I think it was recorded under not particularly cold uppers. All it needed was snow cover clear skies in a relatively cold air mass with light winds.

That night was actually my first double figure minima since December 2010.
Will go for -19.5C in Altnaharra this January coming.

-14.2C in Braemar, 20th February

Similar to you, I'm going for -12.8 in Braemar but on 11th December.

My thinking is during a clear night with snow cover after a 72 hour Northerly where high pressure noses in before toppling. I feel early winter will be when we get these short Northerly outbreaks, before that Euro high builds in and PV settles over NE Canada.

I'm expecting some cold weather early on in the season, althought I think the lowest temperatures are easier to achieve later on.  Cooler seas and all that jazz.

No, it was the coldest February temperature since 1955 when Braemar recorded -25.0C on the 23rd.

Thanks. Thought it was -22 same as Jan 2010. As said a notably low figure and achieved in less than cold uppers. The fact we were able to record such low set up in the synoptic at the time quite impressive in this warming world.

Depends on your source:

No, you're reading that information incorrectly. It shows Aviemore recorded -23.9C in 1895 with an asterisk. Beside the Aviemore reading it shows that Braemar recorded a low of -20.5C in 1978. It looks like the Aviemore reading is unofficial.

There only is one official source when it comes to weather and that's the Met Office and they confirmed that -23C is the coldest February temperature recorded since 1955.

The winter of 2020/21 overall has been wet and dull with near average temperature.

Please can we keep this thread alive, should have been very active yesterday, most people saw there coldest night of the season. As said Shap went down to -9 degrees, was any where lower? People seem to be focused on snow all the time, but not depth of cold. I will keep resurrecting it when there is interest!

Someone posted a link for temperatures in another thread I think -10.3c was recorded somewhere in Lancashire.
