I can see tomorrow being a complete mare. 120 mile round trip, the return leg occuring when the winds are forecast to be at their most potent.

Braemar is forecast to get heavy snow tomorrow, throw in the high winds and it should be wild over there.

Regretting not taking tomorrow off as a holiday.....

It's looking quite hit and miss at the moment. Some places might get a decent covering of snow, some eastern parts might get severe gales. The west looks like missing out on everything...

Daytime coldest day of the autumn with a daytime max of just 3.1c - temp actually rising the last couple of hours, now 3.5c!

Dry, light winds and a few bright spells.

Cancelling the kids after school sporting activities tomorrow as driving around then is looking really rather dodgy.

I suspect the local roofers, tree surgeons & trampoline wholesalers are in for a very bumper Black Friday...

I'm in the office in Edinburgh today already worrying about the train home.

A damp, windy and chilly start. The car was moving about a fair bit on the commute this morning. The fishing fleet seems to have bolted for cover as Peterhead Harbour looks full. The wind is already pretty strong with gusts rocking the car which weighs a couple of tons.

Planning to bail around 3pm as 75 mph gusts are forecast.

This is going to get messy.....

Latest forecast has increased gusts to 82 mph.

Daughter’s boyfriend is one week into a ten week stint on a semi-submersible crane vessel out in the North Sea, hope they’ve moved to calmer waters further west to see out this storm. Definitely wouldn’t fancy being on a rig or supply vessel in this! If he sends any photos, I’ll share them.  Our town Christmas festival has been postponed until next weekend to keep everyone safe Just in case it does get bad along the Dee corridor.

Temperatures hovered around 5c until 4.30am then started to drop, currently 3.8c, DP 2.0c.

How many times in 100 years (there must be records kept somewhere) have we seen a northerly hurricane 12 forecast for the Forth? Has to be very unusual.

Well I am still in sunny Fuerteventura ( although dull this morning) fly back into Edinburgh tomorrow night ( if airport is still there by then..) then will see what A9 is like.  Heavy driving snow showers at home this morning trying to take a picture from field webcam but tech is not being helpful.  Light covering of snow it appears.

Definitely not a day to be offshore, pretty sure we'll see reports of older generation accommodation barges snapping anchors and going on a jolly in the North Sea.

A semi-sub crane barge will have its own propulsion and be dynamically positioned. Not bad choice in a storm

It's unlikely the stronger winds will affect that far inland from about Edinburgh westwards, for example the peak forecast gusts at Edinburgh Airport are:

GFS: 67mpg

Edinburgh Airport TAF: 58mph

Met-Office Automated: 50mph

The TAF is most likely to be accurate out of those three, it's usual for the actual peak gust to be between the GFS and the Met-Office Automated forecast.

And yet the Met office has EDI in the amber warning area.

BTW, a slight wobble to the southwest (even 5 nautical miles) as the system dives south and it is very likely to affect inland. Wait and see still.

Just a reminder, if they issue one, what a Red Warning is:

Quote

Red Warning: Dangerous weather is expected and, if you haven’t already done so, you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the severe weather. It is very likely that there will be a risk to life, with substantial disruption to travel, energy supplies and possibly widespread damage to property and infrastructure. You should avoid travelling, where possible, and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.

Folks on the Fife coast, for example, just about on the cusp of that going by the latest charts. ^

And we're off, first snow of the season.

Frequent heavy showers passing through on a already very strong NW wind.

All of rain bar the last one that turned to snow for a minute or two - no chance of lying but nice to see it blowing horizontally past the window

Even in the sunny periods between the showers, feeling Baltic outside with a current temperature of 3c.

Edit - the various Shetland webcams are worth having a look just now, very stormy there - https://www.shetlandwebcams.com/

A 5 nautical mile wobble would bring it 5 nautical miles inland, so still not "that far" inland?

= windfield expands further inland. Pretty basic meteorology.
