Fantastic pics of cloud iridescence scrat. Thanks for sharing.

A nice simple explanation from NOAA who call them "rainbow clouds":

"But have you ever seen a rainbow cloud? This can happen because of something called cloud iridescence. It usually happens in altocumulus, cirrocumulus, lenticular and cirrus clouds. Iridescent clouds happen because of diffraction – a phenomenon that occurs when small water droplets or small ice crystals scatter the sun's light."
Source: NOAA/Scijinks

A fuller explanation on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_iridescence

Thanks so much for your explanation....it was beautiful to see!

We got to a max of 20C at 13:14 today although had only a couple hours of sun, currently 16C  and the evening dog walk felt almost summer like/bit sticky.  Humidity now 92%

Wind veering between SW and SSW, between 3-6mph until about an hour ago falling to 1mph.

Pressure 1026.9hPa steady and no rain has fallen in the last 24 hours.

Today's weather highlight - seeing photos of some stunning cloudscapes and sunsets posted by regional members - thank you for sharing, it's really uplifting to see them

Beautiful pictures , lucky you  I love this site, it has lots of juicy weather phenomenon

Fog for us this morning and wow it feels very sticky and humid this morning, 15c already and suspect the sun will be in short supply again today.

Foggy start here too, but it's already lifted into low cloud. Now it's just grey and gloomy outside with everywhere damp after the drizzle from yesterday evening.

Arpege cloud cover forecast for today (white=cloud, black=clear) not very optimistic about sunshine amounts. Maybe some hazy sunshine later this afternoon and the extreme east of the Region in with the best chance of some late clear sky. The hoped for pleasant few days of October sunshine are literally turning into a damp squib.

Like others have said, the promise of a last few days of sun and warmth have failed to materialise (yet!) lots of cloud yesterday, with like drizzle which left everything a bit damp this morning. Signs around here that the skies are slowly (slowly being the word!) brightening but unsure if it will give away to any major sunny spells before sunset which seems to be getting earlier and earlier!

MO is going for a sunny day tomorrow now, with more cloud around on Sunday. BBC forecast this morning seemed to suggest the opposite! Currently somewhere between 15-16c with cloud.

MetO forecast? Bah humbug -  mine shows, for today, "maximum temp 20C" Pfft, that seems impossibly optimistic, as it's grey and we've had a bit of that 'thing' where there's drizzle in the air, but it doesn't seem to reach the ground? Anyways didn't bother to put the washing out to dry... used the airer instead.

Yup, been waiting on t-shirts to dry on wash line outside since yesterday. And now it's drizzling again! 18c and yuck.

Totally agree, been promises for the last two days which have failed to deliver. Currently about 18c here and grey as far as you can see!

Yes a lot of over promising earlier in the week from the Beeb and other forecasters. Still mainly overcast after a lot of morning drizzle. No doubt we will see a few rays eventually this afternoon but too late now we're heading into mid October to save the day.

It took the majority of the day for the dark cloud cover to be extinguished but eventually we are blessed with a
beautiful sunny  autumn evening. Views over the Brede valley, so calm and tranquil.

It is disappointing that yesterday and today have been so dull here, drizzly much of time especially yesterday and a little today. The approaching clearance to the SE much too far away to be of any benefit.

A foggy start here but already clearing and unlike the other morning, this time not lifting into cloud but instead revealing blue sky. Hurray!
Interesting to check the Met Office station near me (Wattisham) as the description switched back and forth between mist and fog through the night. Checking the definition it seems it's misty if you can see 1km or more, fog if you can't.

The satellite shows the Region set fair for sunshine once any mist/fog clears. (The black in the top left is where the sun hasn't risen yet).

Arpege cloud forecast confirms that the Region should see plenty of sunshine this afternoon. At last.....!

All this moisture in the air is preventing my lawn from drying so I can cut it. It's like a jungle out there.

Fell asleep before posting yesterday's weather stats but max temp was 18.7 between 3 and 4pm and still in mid 16'sC when walking my dog yesterday evening; humidity was high all day.

Woke at 5am to find thick fog and temp of 8.6C.  Fog had burned off by 9ish and its been a beautifully sunny morning.  Cloud now drifting over and sun becoming intermittent, unfortunately.   Current humidity is 84% and with 16C  it is feeling very pleasant.

Very little wind, with 2 min average at 0.0 and 10 minute average of 1.0mph.  Pressure 1029.0hPa steady.  No rain has fallen since we had 1.0mm on 5th October.

As Lauren mentioned earlier, the grass is very wet but growth is impressively/horrifyingly (delete as required) fast.  Managed to cut it on Thursday afternoon but it could almost do with another already. Not today though, its soaking despite hours of sun.

Edited by Soaring Hawk
Thursday, not Monday we cut the grass, which makes the growth horrifyingly fast so far as I'm concerned!

Lovely sunny day, temp 17c and I managed to hoover the back garden grass, yes hoover, its artificial  Front lawn barely grown since August really, just returning to a green colour, so that doesnt need cutting thankfully.

Did anyone else see loads of spider webs around cars, bushes, trees, roof tops etc this morning whilst it was very foggy? Well, according to folklore: Spiders spinning larger than usual webs is a sign of a cold winter to come ❄️

After the foggy start, the sun eventually made an appearance and the temp was 17C

Temp is now 13.4C
