First Ground and Air Frost Watch Season 2021-22

September is around the corner, and whilst many have to wait until October and sometimes November before they record their first air frost at least, some more frost prone spots can easily record an air frost before then.  Clear skies and cold uppers can produce temps below 0 degrees in sheltered glens of Scotland even in late August.

Here we usually record our first ground frost by early October, and first air frost by about third week of October.

Please use this thread to report recordings of first ground and air frost of the new season.

There have only been 10 days recorded in summer that have never recorded an air frost,5 in July and 5 in August but two of these were actually 0.0 deg.

Also to note -4.5 deg was recorded on 21st Aug 1973

No new records have been set in summer since 2001

To think in some year's lowest min in the UK in December struggles to drop to -5 degrees. That -4.5 degree figure on the 21st seems suspect.. nothing else compares to it. Interesting to note the low mins in 1999 did this coincide with the effects of the sloar eclipse I wonder? Indeed not many date records since 1999, just the rogue one in 2016.

You could say it is suspect but Grantown recorded  -4.4 deg the same day

Getting closer. 10 of the main Met stations under 5C last night, with 1.9C the lowest, at Shap again.

I wonder if an amateur station hit 0C anywhere.  0.7C is closest yet from the Met.

On a related topic, does anyone know the last year there was an air frost in every month? I reckon it might have been 2006 (I paid attention after noticing a freezing night in the July, but my memory might not be entirely accurate), and I've not been keeping tabs of such things diligently in recent years.

An interesting question but Breamar has only managed it once in 1973

Turning into a later starter this year it seems on the frost front. Too much cloud at night and milder uppers, just need an injection of clear skies and Highland region would see an air frost soon I think.

Oh aye, I was being dim! Thanks.

Maybe I looked at data for Altnaharra or similar? I've searched the Met Office archives without luck. Can't even find the source of what you linked to :(

3.1 last night here. It's coming!

Nearly a grass frost then.. in an average year frost prone spots in Cumbria should have recorded their first ground frost at least by end of September. Think Shap has done so, but few other places. Rest of this week looks too cloudy or winst for any frost. In many a year air frosts have been recorded here in September, suspect will be October this year.

1C at Shap this morning according to weatheronline. Redesdale Camp also the same.
