I'm assuming this will be a result of the remnants of Ida, a pretty significant event in its own right

Was just holding on as a TD earlier today "TROPICAL DEPRESSION IDA IS MOVING INTO THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS AND SHOULD BECOME POST-TROPICAL TODAY... ...WIDESPREAD HEAVY RAIN AND AREAS OF LIFE THREATENING FLASH FLOODING ARE LIKELY TODAY AND TONIGHT NEAR THE TRACK OF IDA" NHC

"Mid Atlantic to Southern New England: 3 to 8 inches with isolated higher amounts through Thursday. Significant and life-threatening flash flooding is likely from the Mid-Atlantic into southern New England, especially across highly urbanized metropolitan areas and areas of steep terrain. Widespread moderate and major river flooding impacts are forecast"

Thanks for all your responses. Yes it does seem that $$$$ are something to do with it. I get the practical considerations and the distances involved and the cost and timescales .....its just that with every Hurricane we seem to see the same things damaged / destroyed. While damage is going to be unavoidable with these very powerful hurricanes I just feel that certain infrastructure can surely be made more resistant. Lastly I just dont get this thing about hanging traffic lights suspended on cables over busy junctions? Never seen that over here....to date...anyway....

Me neither, I think it's just cause the whole power network is above ground, which does make it a little harder to have the tragic light system set up like ours.

The images remind me of Hurricane Sandy, seeing parts of New York City flooded.

Bus drivers around the world are made of sterner stuff! Not to mention the buses themselves just seem to keep on going.

Makes you wonder whether it's time to abandon places like this as ocean level rise will only make things worse.

Most will be rebuilt, alot of materials, especially timber framing, stilts etc is reusable. Exterior cladding in ply, or close boarding would need to be bought.

If they get 30-40 years out of the buildings there its still economic, being timber they are fairly cheap in initial outlay but overall maintenance is high anyway due to salt, rot etc. Tbh, they are at best medium term temporary anyway.

The buildings which look relatively untouched are the best, and on stilts, nearly all ground hugging buildings are gone or blown through.

That, and erosion of the land itself with each successive storm too. People are stubborn though.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
