going to make it to cat 5...

Possible, but an extra 12 MpH in sustained winds in the time she has left is a big ask, especially as she approaches shallower waters. I stand ready to eat my hat on that, mind you. Stranger things have happened.

In any case, unless there's a clear case for it (ie, it's obvious), I'm not sure it'd be worth calling it for cat 5 now, and perhaps they'd leave it for the post season review to decide anything marginal. All it'd do is scare the poor sods either stupid enough or unfortunate enough to no longer be able to get out of there.

As is always the case, some people are about to experience hell, whether they let themselves in for it or simply didn't have a choice.

So how high is new orleans new levys?

According to a quick search, between 18 and 30 foot, but also there's a news article (2019) in the scientific american about how the new ones have been sinking due to ground subsidence.  Which would make them vulnerable within 4 years time...  For some reason I doubt they would have had a cat4 verging on a cat5 in mind when writing it up...

Sea-level rise and ground subsidence will render the flood barriers inadequate in just four years

Now at 935mb, she is a monster. 150KT at 928mb so a little above the surface.

With regard to landfall Ida is going to hit the same area as Betsy in 1965, which caused significant levee breaches and flooding in New Orleans (Katrina was much worse though). Ida is already stronger than Betsy.

New Orleans was on the weaker side of Katrina but the unprecedented storm surge to the east was enough to overwhelm Lake Pontchartrain and cause a catastrophe. The city will be on the stronger side of Ida and should experience stronger winds but hopefully the newer levee system will do its job.

Then there's the coast itself (Grand Isle and around) which could become permanently altered.

Provides up to the minute traffic and transit information for Louisiana. View the real time traffic map with travel times, traffic accident details, traffic cameras and other road conditions...

How long some of these keep broadcasting is anyone's guess. Daylight dawn's on Louisianas worst day.

You have to question the sanity of someone who is staying in Grand Isle through this.
