Really surprised there's not more talk about this right now, was in oxford when that hook passed through and it's taken several trees down and some cladding off the tower blocks! Half expected to see a tornado as the winds were so strong

The roads in the county were a nightmare yesterday

Caught another anvil coming back home from town but was in the car so picture quality might not be good

This was from this evenings South Today:

2021-11-01.thumb.png.a770a4f8b4dbc40793dbfd2edcc6e536.png

That was a 20 mile wide damage path of straight line winds up to 90mph. She also said that tornadoes were likely to have been embedded in that too.

Have we got any readings from within the path, particularly in the Midlands, where there seems to be quite a bit of damage in Northampton, Wellingborough up towards Lincolnshire. Metoffice showed Wittering near Peterborough with 69mph gust around 11am, but I suspected that straight line winds exceeded that in the worst hit locations, this confirms it.

Also what was the cause, I saw the 'hook' form on the weather radar, with a squall line to the north of it. Was it upper level winds descending to the surface, or something else?

I can believe that. We recorded gusts of 60mph and there was a considerable amount of debris and blocked roads as a result

What looks like some slight rotation over Southampton earlier this afternoon. Probably a dying rotation, if not just some cool turbulence.

The video is on 10x speed btw, hence why it’s only a few seconds long.

Not a lot of rotation here in Northants, one of the best November days in memory, not forecast at all.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sat 20 Nov 2021 - 05:59 UTC Sun 21 Nov 2021

ISSUED 09:54 UTC Sat 20 Nov 2021

ISSUED BY: Dan

Behind a southwards-moving cold front, cold air aloft will overspread relatively warm SSTs and aid the development of numerous showers over open seas. These will feed inland to areas exposed to the north/northwesterly wind, particularly through Saturday evening and night, spreading southwards with time. Hail is likely in many showers, with accumulating snow on high ground in Scotland. A few isolated lightning strikes may also be possible.

Barring any surprise thunder in December, i've recorded a total of 10 days here

Not a bad year for storms, the highlight being a great night-time storm in May

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Fri 26 Nov 2021 - 05:59 UTC Sat 27 Nov 2021

ISSUED 09:23 UTC Fri 26 Nov 2021

ISSUED BY: Dan

A very messy period for ascertaining site-specific detail, as a marked mid-level low slides southwards down the North Sea/eastern Britain on Friday and Friday night, the associated significant cold pool creating steep mid-level lapse rates and a broadly unstable environment in response to relatively warm SSTs. Coastal showers and more widepsread areas of showery rain will spread erratically southwards through this forecast period, and while the overall risk of lightning is rather low in any one location a few isolated lightning strikes could occur just about anywhere.

Perhaps particular attention is given close to the wrap-around occlusion that affects the Moray Firth and NE Scotland during the daytime, and then shifts into SE Scotland / Cen N and NE England during the evening and night hours. Here, especially later in the day, strong ascent, substantial wind shear in the vicinity of the frontal boundary and weak/limited CAPE largely confined to the mixed-phase region may be sufficient to produce a few sporadic lightning strikes. Very strong gradient winds are expected in NE / E / SE Scotland and NE England, but potentially exacerbated by strong convection in the area with some NWP guidance suggestive of gusts near 100mph offshore.  An additional focus for a few lightning strikes may also be west Wales down to SW England on Friday night, as showers develop along a convergence line.
