Storms and Convective discussion - 16th June 2021 onwards

Good afternoon storm fans

Well done to everyone that got a decent storm last night, it was decent display once the first rain band passed through.

I did manage to get some shots, but I need to go through and sort them, so will post when I get a moment.

The skies are starting to look better, plus we have quite a clear slot passing through, this should have an impact on getting something going for people further inland,  and this is what I can see to my north

Good luck, let's hope someone kicks off soon

If it kicks off down your neck of the woods later, maybe tempted to drive down to get my fix.... provided that the pub hasn't drawn me in first

The cam quality is 1080mp, pretty much the best you can get for a webcam.... And not only that the meteors had a flickering firey trail and actually go behind a cloud before reemerging, that's one hell of a seagull if that's the case, check out the video below...

Sorry, I don't mean to further derail the thread here, but I can't let this go.
I have decades behind me of meteor shower-watching and photography and I can tell you categorically that these are not meteors.
First of all, meteors do not meander about in their path the way these objects do.
Second: only fireballs (larger meteors) appear on camera for that length of time and they are rare; most meteors burn up in a second or far less.
Third: it doesn't matter how high the resolution of the webcam is, it's only going to look as good as the stream allows.
Fourth: artifacting is common in poor / low light conditions when using digital webcams as they tend to use a lower shutter speed and the nature of ccd's. This accounts for the "fiery trails". It's extremely common to see this, often with distant insects at night.
Fifth: If you break down the video into frames, as I have, you'll notice that the object "disappears" during a bright lightning flash. During this time the exposure changes to compensate. As the flash dissipates, the exposure cranks up again and the object "reappears".
I hope this settles the matter.

Forecasts are all suggesting a convergence up from the SW into southern and central areas. Sun is now breaking through the clouds so expecting some potentially heavy surface-based storms to develop.

Exact location is hard to determine, but areas north of Oxford were never going to see much from this

Had the sun all day down here in Dover, it's rather warm and sultry. Feel much more stormy than yesterday ever did, but doesn't look it at all

TORRO is a privately-supported research body specialising in severe convective weather in Britain and Ireland

Interesting

rather more detail

Areas affected

Parts of southern England

Parts of SW England

Parts of S Wales

Hazards

Isolated brief tornadoes

Heavy rain

CG lightning

Gusty winds

Discussion

Cloud is breaking to allow spells of sunshine to develop across southern Britain. This should allow several hundred J/Kg of CAPE to develop, perhaps 700-800 J/Kg in a few places. One or more low-level convergence zones should develop, mainly due to sea breeze boundaries. With low cloud bases and decent low-level convergence, any showers or thunderstorms which develop along or close to these boundaries will have a chance of producing a few funnel clouds, and perhaps one or two brief/weak tornadoes.

Gusty winds and locally heavy rain will be possible, with a few thunderstorms possible too bringing CG lightning.

Activity should wane through the evening.

Heard a faint rumble a few minutes ago from the cell between Alton and Farnham, looks to be fairly decent if it sustains, though I think it will skim south of me by a few miles.

A bit of a disappointing lightning distribution for here. Despite the numerous rounds of very active storms in the channel etc, they all died to a couple areas of rain before they hit here. Dorset east, and north Devon/Somerset got some though.

The first area of rain in the evening did have a few very occasional discharges of sheet lightning/distant thunder, but still a bit disappointing given the distribution of lightning on the map above.

I bet the Channel Islands and paces with a clear view of the intense cells in the channel had a great view.

Hardly any thunder so far this year here.
