Sat on Hayling Island beach looking east and seeing some lovely orange-pink lightning to our east

Ok vent incoming— Ugh, why does everything get sooo hyped up by all the weather forecasters etc and looks promising on the models and then always ends up being a wet mess over London and much of the SE with a small little area of lightning on the coasts. This has happened for nearly 3 years straight with these import events. It’s just so deflating to see this happen again and again  I’m longing for something like 26th May 2018 at least these days. Yes there’s another few days of potential but ?‍♂️ we’ll just have to see.

I've been waiting since 2015....

And that's my big concern right now.

Every plume event I can remember that started out a bit drizzly ended up a damp squib.

Others where skies remained clear or Ac-y have gone bang very quickly after nightfall.

The most lightning prolific ones are the ones that go from clear skies (or at least clear radar) to lighting in about 20minutes. To be honest if storms usually fire more than 30-40miles offshore from here I rarely hold my breath, they are always best in their explosive stage.  I've never once seen drizzle turn into a storm.

Managed to hold still for this one.

Almighty flash and an almighty bang to go with it!

Don’t post often, might get some hate but well done Kent you win again. Kick me if I’m wrong in the morning lol

To be fair Kent have missed most the action the last few years so they deserve it! Much better chances else where thursday night going into Friday and also Satuday. I have also heard there is a possibility Sunday may show some interest that needs watching.

Looking towards Dungeness and Ashford it can only be described as being like a strobe light - its pretty incredible. Theres not a great deal of thunder and the wind is hot, hotter than it felt an hour ago it seems.

Pleased with the stuff near Exeter and Cardiff, could get further north eventually.

I’m in Exeter, nothing happening here at all? Very thin cloud with light occasional spots of rain. What am I missing?

Rinse and repeat! This whole event has had a familiar, disappointing feel to ones like 24 June '19 there.

People keep saying give it a chance, I'm sorry radar returns like those in the purple box don't just fire up, the atmosphere just doesn't have enough energy to sustain strong updrafts. To be fair I posted at 3pm I thought that could be the case and I see little to change my mind.

This is effectively a Sussex / Kent clipper now.

This always was going to be the case. And always is ...! Never get your hopes up when models show otherwise.

Heaviest rain here I've seen in a long while, persistent torrential convective deluge courtesy of cell training. Wouldn't be surprised to hear reports of flooding around here by the morning. the word 'tropical' springs to mind... Must be those high PWAT values!

Just to say, I don’t think it is a done deal that this clips Kent and is over. The system to the south looks to me more organised, and would take a path like this overnight, perhaps…

Well you say that but I often miss out on a classic Kent clipper, being in West Kent. Also missed all the midlands/northern storm fest last year. Not too annoyed as I’m almost guaranteed to succeed in heatwaves in this corner of the country. Which is just as well being a fan of the heat.

I've pretty much given up on plume events for East Anglia tbh. Everything heads straight into Benelux or becomes monstrously powerful in the North Sea.

We weren’t really forecast to get anything according to weather pro app, to be fair they’re normally fairly reliable. Never know something may just happen in a few hours but I won’t be building my hopes like so many seem to here only to end up disappointed
