Snow settling 800m on the 11th.  Less cold up to 19th but occasional fronts from the west bringing a shower or two. A dusting of snow to 1100m on the morning of the 16th. The extreme minimum that night was -7.4c in central Tasmania. Only a couple of showers after this, then dry from the 22nd-30th as high pressure dominated across southern Australia.

At Heathrow it was the 7th coldest, 7th driest and 7th sunniest April on record! The sunshine hours are estimated values rather than the raw figures, based on the station receiving 133% of its average sunshine.

Yes, using the raw values. To get the true CS value you have to apply a correction to that number, and that is true with all sunshine recordings taken at that station since September 2005. The sunshine values I requested from the Met Office via a FOI request have already been corrected.

I originally asked them for sunshine data from Kew Gardens for the 2006-2020 period, but since Kew no longer records sun they sent me the corrected Heathrow sunshine values instead. I compared them to the values on the historic data page and there seems to be the following correction made to get the actual value per month:

Jan: 1.08

Feb: 1.08

Mar: 1.08

Apr: 1.09

May: 1.12

Jun: 1.14

Jul: 1.13

Aug: 1.12

Sep: 1.10

Oct: 1.09

Nov: 1.08

Dec: 1.07

Where the raw value is multiplied by that number to get the corrected sunshine total.

This link shows that Heathrow recorded 133% of it's 81-10 April average (that being 168.7 hours). 133% of 168.7 is 224.4.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
