Looks like my part of Wiltshire is set for the 3rd consecutive soaking Sunday evening!

1.30mm in a few hours on the 27th June.

2.13mm last Sunday evening.

3.Got to be a chance of somewhere between those figures today!

The benefits of living up north.

Looking north east at 3:18 am.

You won’t see that down in the Med (or even in the far south of England).

Sky’s too clear to be down south this summer lol.

Just a boring dry cloudy day here. ☁️ Currently 21°C. Nothing much else to say.

I’ve just heard “the sun ain’t gonna shine any more” on the radio after reading this lol. Looking at the radar the south west has had a proper soaking this afternoon!

It’s pretty dire for July, but only 6mm here so nothing too impressive. Next week is looking a lot better!

Had a look back in the archives and boy oh boy there is vastly more moaning on the moans/ramps/banter tread in the Summer than in Winter! Quite a contrast in fact. Interesting.

I find that very hard to believe! But whatever, moaning is entirely justified for summer lovers in the south. Northerners have enjoyed very different conditions, though

Even more moaning than there was on the winter 2019/20 thread?

No I don't. I might have to look into one as I had a poor nights sleep last night, not helped by the warmth. If I had a fan the noise would probably keep me awake, might get a portable air con unit.

Cooler today. Currently overcast and around 19C. No rain yet. Still 22.7C in the bedroom though.

Yes, a good fan helps and earplugs for the noise, though you quickly get used to it ??

During another cloudy weekend and with the rain now pouring down (again), I have spotted what looks like blight on my potatoes, it has been reported on other plots on my allotment site. I might be able to save the second earlies but if it is blight, the maincrop are likely destroyed. My brassicas are taking a hammering from slug activity which is thriving in the damp conditions, and some of my brassicas look like net curtains.

Either I have to find a method of gardening that is resistant to locked in anomalous weather patterns caused by blocking, or I give up the plot, because it is not enjoyable and arguably not worth my time putting in so much effort to cultivate crops only to watch them get wiped out.

It seems to be two extremes. Those in the SE are enduring a very poor coolish, cloudy and wet summer. Almost everywhere else in the country is bone dry.

Not quite. There has been a balance of sorts this month. Some places in the north have been very wet.. some still quite dry.. but more places wetter than average including here. Some torrential heavy bouts at times..

Yes it is very odd, usually it is the opposite way around! It does make a nice change though, usually the SE centric media are harping on about how hot/nice it is when it's just the SE that are getting the heat and everywhere else is getting a crap summer.

Overcast today, with a high of 21C, but stayed bone dry (despite showers forecast all day here by the bbc weather app) until about 10 pm when we had about five minutes of rain. Another warm and cloudy night ahead.

Last weekend was very wet here, but this weekend I've barely had anything. It's just been a warm and cloudy weekend here.

Edit: Just started raining here.

Things must have changed significantly in the last two weeks in that case. In June, almost everywhere outside the SE was below 75% of average rainfall. You can see on the Met Office anomaly map NW England was one of the driest places in the country in terms of departure from the mean.

I was looking forward to a drop of rain today, maybe the odd thunderstorm thrown in..

However, I've recorded almost 72mm since 3:30am, flooding everywhere, and the yellow warning doesn't come in to force until midday. ?‍♂️

Not so happy with the last couple of sets of runs, everything points to a fairly brief settled spell 1 week or so. Maybe they're now going to switch to always predicting unsettled at day 8-10, that never arrives?......Yeah I know.

My family has owned this house since it was built over 20yrs ago and there’s a tiny creek about 50metres in front of my house that’s about 2metres wide and maybe 60cm deep, it never floods, and I mean never. It’s about 20metres wide currently, my road is completely flooded completely impassable. Radar estimates 50-70mm which seems completely right. Starting to look back though the wettest June-July combos, this must be right up there.

Every summer in the models thread, whenever temperatures fail to break 30C in a hot spell, many people say things like "ah well, 27C is still hot and usable!".

It's the same as a possibly snowy spell in the winter delivering no snow... but people in that thread don't say "ah well, it's still cold and frosty!".

I don't like heat but I like extremes, so if it's going to get to 28/29C then I'd rather it got well into the thirties - both are unpleasant but at least the latter's rarer and meteorologically more interesting!

Frost does not bring the same beauty to the landscape as snow (it can bring its own beauty), it does not allow sledging or bring back childhood memories of sledging, and you can't feel the satisfying crunch under your feet. Frost also largely disappears quickly unlike a proper snowfall (I mean proper, not the useless two inches that the lowlands get once or twice each year) in all but the coldest spells. Frost doesn't compare to snow in terms of enjoyment.

I'm as or more enthused about windstorms than snow in the winter, and have often wondered what the strongest winds are that could be experienced in the current climate over lowland populated areas from a deep low pressure system. Is Jan 1976, Jan 1990 or Oct 1987 the upper limit, or is it theoretically possible to get more extreme and damaging winds? Extreme value theory gives an approximation, but that is a statistical, not a physical method. This doesn't mean I wish for every low pressure system in winter during a mobile Atlantic regime to become a sub 950mb monster before slamming into England with 100+ mph gusts, I wouldn't wish for a natural disaster on anyone.

I remember July 2017 was also a very wet month down on the south coast with over 100 mm of rainfall.

Overcast and damp here today, with some heavier rain earlier.

At least it's cooled down the bedroom a bit - 23C yesterday now down to 22C. Despite the lack of heat I've found recent nights to be very close and oppressive. Hopefully the switch to high pressure will reduce the humdity and make the nights cooler and fresher again.

I think it's all this cloud and dampness that's keeping it warm at night, up here it hasn't been excessively wet but most days have been mostly cloudy/overcast and warm with fairly high humidity. The winds have also been very light which hasn't helped things. A bit of breeze can be a lifesaver in summer, and can make an otherwise boiling hot day more bearable.

Ideally I'd prefer high pressure centered just to the west of the country bringing cooler fresher air from the north west, with clear skies and daytime highs around 20C and lovely cool fresh nights around 10C, with low humdity. That would be perfect for me.

Currently 17C outside but with 90% humidity. Ugh.

Thankfully 20C dew points are rare up here.

Still raining here, I am getting the same weather that you guys got yesterday. I would like to see some sunshine though, as long as it isn't baking hot. Its been very cloudy and muggy the last few days, not my cup of tea at all.
