If you want to complete the perfect Summer Sun impression, you need to post the daily weather observation thread as well  at precisely midnight UK time as they have been doing so every night since mid October 2017.  No wonder their avatar has dark glasses... it must be to hide the dark circles and huge bags under their eyes......

Well for me it's the opposite problem, if I want to follow developing weather in the UK or Ireland during the day, I have to stay up all night in my time zone where midnight is 0800 BST. Luckily there are only about half a dozen days a year with weather compelling enough to do that, otherwise I can just check out the results at a more convenient time. I do get to see a lot more overnight weather obs than most people reading this would. You're not missing much.

Touch and go whether we end in the 10s or 9s, today and tomorrow will return warm CET values, quite possible finish of 10.4 degrees before corrections. Can we see a 0.5 degree correction, possible, but unlikely. I suspect the final figure will be 10.0 or 10.1 degrees, still the coldest May since 1996, three warm days at the tail end has redeemed it slightly but it has been overall a very poor May. Thanks goodness its a very late Bank Holiday this year.

EWP appears to be done with the tracker stalled at 122 mm, nothing yesterday or today ... so with the expectation of having this confirmed as the provisional value tomorrow, here's the scoring update for the EWP contest. Slight adjustments will likely be required after the reporting of the final value on 5th June, especially if the final value is below 121.4 mm at which point several scores for May would change by 0.2 points. But these adjustments are not likely to move very many annual ranks unless you're (a) close to 76 mm for your May forecast and (b) very close to other totals in the annual scoring. This is very similar to the earlier post except that Shillitocettwo moved up from 30th to 26th in the May scoring and also up a couple of spots in the annual ranks.

Table shows annual contest rank, forecaster name, total points, average error (mm) with its rank (minimum four contests required for ranking there), then the May forecast and its rank, May points, followed by seasonal spring total points and rank. Additional scoring info and the expanded log of historical EWP covering the whole data set now (1766-2021) can be found in the excel scoring file attached.

_ for May entrants with fewer than three forecasts, the number of entries is in brackets after the forecaster's name.

_ this table only tracks regular entrants and May entrants, see excel file for any scoring info in other cases.

_ only those with 4-6 forecasts are ranked for average error.

_ missing ranks 49 moffat (three and bye bye), 53 Cymro (two and so long), 55 Sleety, 56 Booferking, 57 Dog Toffee and 59 Joneseye, 61 DAVID SNOW, 62 Moorlander (all three and done), 60 cawsand and 63 PaulT (two and farewell), most of the rest had one or two entries but our table has now already listed most of the regulars. 64 CheesepuffScott has three entries but may appear again I think.

Since errors in February were quite large for many, the average rank for errors is a bit distorted by that, Polar Gael had the best forecast in February and a small error there, which is why their average error rank is best.

Excel file with all scoring, and the historical EWP and bonus "all-time scoring" sections. Reef, Don, Mulzy, DR(S)NO, Godber1, BornFromTheVoid, J10, Jonboy, Stationary Front, Midlands Ice Age, JeffC, seaside60, Bobd29, Roger J Smith, virtualsphere, BlastFromThePast, The PIT, syed2878, davehsug, SteveB, EdS (General Cluster), Polar Gael, weather-history, Feb1991Blizzard, DAVID SNOW, Norrance, Stargazer, daniel* Weather26 and Kirkcaldy Weather are the top 30 in all-time (now 3.5 years) scoring.

Surely it's going to be 10.4C before corrections and then probably around the 10C mark afterwards. Unlikely to drop below 10C now but not impossible.

May go up to 10.5 given we had a 0.2 degree rise today, finishing mark somewhere between 10.0 and 10.2 degrees. A cold May.

Why do you seem so agitated, look, this May will go down in the books  as being a cold and very wet month.

You can't change that so , get a grip.

Just give it a rest will you. Massive chip on your shoulder. Put me on ignore if you have such a problem with me.

The capitals in your name say it all. Seems like it's you that has the problem.

10.1C makes May 2021 the 61st coldest on record, and Spring (MAM) the 132nd coldest on record.

Shame we didn't go sub-10C in the end. This month does at least tell us that it's still possible, though.

It just goes to show that after the first significantly below average April for 32 years, getting a notably cold May after it (sub 10*C) was asking too much going by the standards of today and of the last 30 odd years.  It would at least have stood out more in the records if we had managed a really cold May (sub 10*C CET) and despite that looking promising earlier in the month it still did not happen.  Nevertheless a final May CET of 10.15*C was still the lowest since the last notably cold May in 1996.

Quite a mixture of Junes that followed these years. June 1987 was very cool (12.8C), while 1772 was a warm one (16.1C). These two were both in the top 30.

Have edited the confirmed values into posts made recently about the April-May cold ranking, and the longevity of March max as spring max.

To summarize, the 10.1 value makes 2021 t27 coldest April-May with a number of other (all very distant) years and equal to 1772 in both April and May. That places 2021 ahead of 1986 as third coldest since 1891 (1902 and 1941 colder) so second coldest since 1902 and coldest since 1941.

The final numbers were cooler in the determination of the March max longevity, it turns out that 2021 was still in first place after 28th (13.2) and only fell to fourth (provisional value made it 8th) when 29th hit 15.7 for the new spring max. Thus only 1957 (-0.6), 1777 (1.1) and 1815 (1.3) had lower values of the  (spring max minus March max) value. (2021 1.4 C).

==================================

Moving on to best combined forecast, coldest winter has 3rd CET and 3rd EWP for six ranking points. I Rem Atl 252 has 1st CET and 6th EWP for seven ranking points. Daniel* was 6th CET and 7th EWP for 13.

The thing that has always struck me is how many pretty cold Aprils were followed by pretty warm Mays, so I'm not sure what NorthEasterly blast is saying "it was too much by today's standards".  Getting April and May both comfortably below average is not that common

The thing that has always struck me is how many pretty cold Aprils were followed by pretty warm Mays, so I'm not sure what NorthEasterly blast is saying "it was too much by today's standards".  Getting April and May both comfortably below average is not that common

"It just goes to show that after the first significantly below average April for 32 years, getting a notably cold May after it (sub 10*C) was asking too much going by the standards of today and of the last 30 odd years.  It would at least have stood out more in the records if we had managed a really cold May (sub 10*C CET) and despite that looking promising earlier in the month it still did not happen.  Nevertheless a final May CET of 10.15*C was still the lowest since the last notably cold May in 1996."

How many significantly cold Aprils (sub 7*C) have been followed by May CETs under 10*C?  I believe that 1941 was the last such example, and before that in 1891.   We were only about 0.2 off in May of matching that feat this year, but we still did not quite make it.  I thought that we had a chance up until the last week of May of managing the first time since 1941 of an April below 7*C and a May below 10*C, but in the end we did not quite make that feat.
