A clear and exceptionally cold start. The min temp of -3.4C was the lowest on record here going back to 1980, beating the previous -3.1C set in April 1990. Even more interesting is that it comes just 12 days after beating the highest March maximum record!

Currently clear, sunny and frosty with a temp of -2.4C.

A snow shower yesterday evening gave a covering of 0.5cm but this is thawing quickly in the sunshine. Apart from the shower the night was dry with long clear periods. It was a sunny and almost cloudless start to the morning but low St spread from the north west by 0700 g.m.t and it became  foggy above 340 mts. The low cloud has cleared rapidly since 0815 g.m.t and it's now sunny again.

At 0800 g.m.t

Temp; 0.3c

24 hr max; 7.0c

24 hr min; -2.0c

Grass min; -6.1c

Rainfall in 24 hrs ending 0800 g.m.t; 0.3 mm

Mean wind speed; 9 mph NW

7 oktas St

Vis; 4 km

Ground 60% covered with 0.3 cm of snow

Just checked my files from the start January 1997 and the -3.5 C this morning is the coldest in my records, the next lowest is -2.5 C in 2019

Its probably the coldest in your neck of the woods since 1990 John. Finningley RAF managed -5.4C that year. 1996 had a few cold nights so its possible it was colder than -3.5C then but either way its the coldest night in at least 25 years.

I suspect you are probably correct, April 1990 was a month before I arrived here, Finningley closed late summer 1995 and I only started keeping a record of the weather here in January 1997, so that date slips between the two!

Woke up to moderate wet snow giving our first April lying snow since 2008 and the latest in the season that I can remember, around 2cm. Sunny from around 10am onwards, and the snow thawed completely by lunchtime. Maximum 9.7, minimum -0.9. Wind light W.
