Cold front moving across the UK later today seem to have developed a marked squall line. This does not really look convective but modelling suggest quick bursts of low level winds up to 60mph and heavy rainfall as the boundary crosses the UK.

More chances of thunderstorms tomorrow first Western areas and perhaps later Eastern areas.

This squall line looks quite active over Somerset at present as it advances eastward. Half hour of pretty intense rain and gusty winds I should imagine although no sign of any electrics yet..

Nice squall coming along. It's a shame it'll collapse before getting here!

Had torrential rain and a bit of hail in it here not long ago. Lasted around 10 minutes.

my storm risk map for tomorrow, most intense storms I think will be in the orange zone with a widespread risk overall and with the cold air at 500hpa hail chances with pretty much any cell image.thumb.png.5e681b24033cd0d5b37fca5786d3c69c.pngnmm_uk1-21-25-0.thumb.png.b0ff6e2df94007ddb64517f667a48a0e.png

Just had a torrential downpour here accompanied by gusty winds and rivers down the road - heaviest rain I’ve seen this year so far. No thunder or lightning.

Given it’s only 09:20, suggests we could see some really quite beefy downpours later.

This is what I expect for today, might want to change that slight further into East Anglia today, also some rotation here so funnel clouds possible.

Just had the heaviest shower of the year. A bunch of hail was mixed in with it. Last about 2 minutes and then it just disappeared. It was heavy rain and hail one second and the next there wasn't even a drop coming from the sky. Very weird.

Not often you'll see two independent rotating curls of precip over the UK.

So far my prediction is doing okay, keep an eye out basically anywhere in the Midlands.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Mon 24 May 2021 - 05:59 UTC Tue 25 May 2021

ISSUED 06:51 UTC Mon 24 May 2021

ISSUED BY: Dan

An upper trough will track eastwards across the UK/Ireland on Monday, with cold air aloft creating an environment with steep mid-level lapse rates and 300-600 J/kg CAPE in response to diurnal heating. A couple of surface lows will provide the focus for areas of showery rain associated with wrap-around occlusions, one over northern Scotland and another over Wales and central/southern England, and this creates a rather messy setup with cloud and lowered surface temperatures near these features. Elsewhere, numerous showers and weak thunderstorms are likely to develop, and the distribution of these will shift through the day. Under the upper trough axis, shear will be rather weak leading to mostly pulse-type storm mode. However, backed low-level winds and slightly stronger flow aloft will exist in advance of the occlusion across northern and eastern England, and this may aid somewhat in cell longevity. The strongest cells may produce hail 1.0-1.5cm in diameter and wind gusts of 40-50mph. The slow storm motion could result in some localised surface water flooding. The slack surface flow over inland parts and resultant low-level convergence may provide the opportunity for a few funnel clouds.

What’s with bedfordshire area getting lots of cells this year and Wellingborough getting nothing but a distant rumble or two once

Hopefully changes today, just want an overhead storm not a couple minutes of drizzle..

Also.. there was some mad rotation happening beneath a towering cumulus - it almost dropped a funnel.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were funnel reports around the Huntingdon / N Bedfordshire area.

But Bedford hasn't?!? Not here anyway, everything seems to break up.
