Looking at radar presently (3:24pm) all the convection is around London and not over it. Why would that be?

(Cant get it to copy )

Couple of shots from wgc

Got very lucky with that SW London storm which seemed to peak over Twickenham. Biblical rain, hail and lots thunder & lightning. One of the best "cold" storms I have seen for years.

Another storm here earlier, was sadly out of the area but looks like around 7 mm of rain within the 15 minutes or so it was here and gone.

Sea convergence + surface heating all being united together again.

Two storms in 2 days is not bad going!

Sky to my West looking particularly mean on the horizon. I’m hoping it will hold together or reintensify as the C London lot drifts this way.

EDIT - just heard distant thunder

My son sent me this picture of a big thunderstorm rolling in from The Pacific about to hit Vancouver last night.  One heck of a lightning display for several hours  as a big convergence zone got going.

Today must have been the best thunder-day (here in the Triangle) since April 2020 . . . and it's still jet-black down Halesworth way!⚡

Interestingly, the 12z WRF increases ML CAPE around the wash area up to 800j/KG and a -4 LI in the window from 21:00 - 23:00 and shows precip breaking out quite intensely! The best may be yet to happen for me today, there’s a cracking Anvil on that N Norfolk storm at the moment, and the winds have fallen flat calm.

I hope you get something, but I notice it’s got a bit of a habit of doing that sort of thing.. Showed similar here last week and on Sunday but I think it was being unrealistic as there didn’t seem to be any energy around at that time at all so just take it with a pinch of salt until you actually see the cells coming towards you lol.

My forecast for today with the lightning attached, East Anglia wasn't really unexpected but I didn't think it would be big ( and it was pretty late when the storm happened) Ireland was okay I would say, London though I think was warranted but maybe not the southern England one, I overestimated the showery activity in the west a little bit but all in all for my first forecast like this I think it was okay.

WRF tends to have a dewpoint bias and thus moisture is overdone and CAPE is massively overdone. It's mentioned in Dan Holley's paper "A climatology of convective available potential energy in Great Britain" from April 2014.

Sky turning very black now as I speak! Seems to have called it pretty good so far. Some very impressive updrafts taking place to my SW

Had an exciting half hour with developing storm going through as part of that 'tail' system bearing down on nw London. Had everything in the mix, rain, hail  , fork light with thunder,   and a beautiful rainbow to finish. Tried to get video of lightning with the rainbow but no luck. Saw it though  , amazing. All this while trying to cook chilly con carni! A couple of shots of the shelf/scud cloud underneath the front as it moved over. Cloud was churning like crazy...20210518_194909.thumb.jpg.345829185ba41233f0ca2dee4b9960ca.jpg
