Dark menacing sky from the Stockport, Wilmslow cell, doesn't seem to want to electrify.  Incidentally, the building below it is the old dole office where Ian Curtis of Joy Division worked. As mentioned before numerous activity around, but nothing firing up close......yet.

I have just been on the phone to my partner's dad in Gainsborough and he will try and send me some pics/vids of the storm over there,...he says it's a right monster with rotation and clouds moving in all directions.

Just cool and drizzly at the moment here. WRF suggests we’re not even at the peak of the CAPE but going by the feel of the air it seems like that could be it. Won’t be anything next few days here because wind is westerly.

One moderate shower this afternoon, that marooned me in the shed for 20 minutes after cutting the grass, but that's it.

Norfolk is the 21st century storm desert.

Liverpool is one hundred percent the new Lincolnshire.

If storms are forecast anywhere in the country, they will happen over Liverpool.

I wish. Only got something on Tuesday nothing since then and I won’t get anything after this now because the wind direction. Last year was quite good but I’m sure it will go back to rubbish again soon.

According to the weather station at the University of Lincoln, there was over 20mm of rain/hail in an hour from this monstrosity, which gave quite a bit of thunder and lighting (it was often difficult to hear the thunder over the noise of the hail coming down!)

Last chance saloon of a light show this evening.... will be if the cells over the E Midlands can be effected by any nocturnal cooling that occurs

First rain of the day here. Nothing too dramatic though. No electrics. Looks as so there were some humdingers up north. .Great pictures from Lincolnshire TWS...

Wonderful convection on this footage Weather-history. You can really see the dynamics of it....

THUNDERSTORM WATCH - MON 17TH MAY 2021

stormmap_170521.thumb.png.093e5396bab7935cc27327f52c5ac52d.png

Issued 2021-05-17 06:12:35
Valid: 17/05/2021 0600 - 18/05/2021 0600

Forecast Details

Broad upper troughing over the far N Atlantic extends east over northern Europe, with a cyclonic westerly upper flow in place across the UK and Ireland on Monday. Surface flow will be generally slack and from the W or NW, but with cold mid-level temperatures and surface heating the airmass will become diurnally unstable – today more particularly towards S and E England – where CAPE values may reach 300-600 j/kg this afternoon. This will support the development of heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Although vertical deep layer shear will be weak, one or two shortwave troughs moving east and zones of surface breeze convergence developing … perhaps between W and NW winds along southern counties and also between NWly and onshore sea breezes across E England … may organise showers/storms into slow-moving clusters that will train over certain areas – leading to a risk of localised flooding. Hail and C-G lightning will also be additional hazards. Funnel clouds or a brief/weak tornado are possible with stronger convective updrafts along convergence zones.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Mon 17 May 2021 - 05:59 UTC Tue 18 May 2021

ISSUED 06:48 UTC Mon 17 May 2021

ISSUED BY: Dan

Little change is expected on Monday, with broad upper troughing covering much of north and northwest Europe. Diurnal heating will yield 300-600 J/kg CAPE and showers will easily develop with modest surface heating, especially aided by low-level convergence zones and orographic forcing, showers/weak thunderstorms then drifting generally to the ESE with time. As with the past few days, deep layer shear will be weak resulting in pulse-type storm mode for the most part, with cold pool/outflow aiding development of daughter cells nearby. Forecast profiles suggest winds will be fairly unidirectional, however as sea breezes develop the backed low-level winds may result in a slight increase in bulk shear from Yorkshire down to Kent, and this could in theory aid storm longevity a little. The strongest cells during the afternoon and early evening could perhaps produce hail 1.0-1.5cm in diameter and local wind gusts of 40-50mph. Showers/weak thunderstorms will gradually decay through the evening hours, however a few will drift towards the Channel Islands from the northwest with a small risk of lightning, and showers are also likely to return close to SW England and S Wales during the early hours of Tuesday which may produce the odd isolated lightning strike.

Probably didn't develop into anything, but some pretty optics on the radar this morning
