A new thread for a brand new storm season. Fingers crossed for a good one for all who want it.

No real thunderstorms on the horizon in the near future but there could be some rumbles of thunder in the wintry showers next week. It is very early in the season though, lets hope the storm season 2021 turns out to be a good one.

Old thread is here:

Can easily spot the cold front from the shear charts maybe some funnels popping up along it  58255F43-5C97-4AEB-87F5-43BED5ED63F8.thumb.png.b3bfdbbe7deaf8f5afb3f8199e8acf76.png399761F4-5C01-4F54-A41E-3E290BAA42D2.thumb.png.651c15ae9546fa8b8e3563305dabf4f8.pngCC15B41E-CFF2-4E96-A9D5-196E8B3EC027.thumb.png.1c9772d6b5fd6f2ce34ba3719b8f08b2.pngD4882343-774F-4FAA-A499-D9A91549FC82.thumb.png.6dd415c02428ccd256719e1c555a8d47.png40CDE992-D3A1-4927-86DD-A23567434070.thumb.png.1b87346368b2f3debe65be8a835d3429.png

I've been reading through the thread from July 2017, before I was a member of this forum. What a night the 18th of that month was with that crazy tornado-warned storm that moved up through Southampton (where I lived at the time), peaking in strength in the Home Counties, before the madness of that channel MCS that came barreling in. I was on the cliff top at Milford-on-Sea that night and the show was breathtaking, including the powerful close negative CG in my profile pic. The storms that night were just as good as anything I've seen in Gambia or the States.

The last 3 seasons have lacked any similar nights for the central south. As always at this time of year, I've got everything crossed we can get another of those nights in the heart of summer.

Seeing as we're talking about the past. I have a few favourites up until about 2019 starting around 2014

2014

A lovely storm around May very energetic and scary was great. Also had a massive hail/Thunderstorm in that Year that was like a typical day in Florida.

2015

Had a massive thunderstorm early on after Beavers could tell it was coming from Hours off might have been 2014 all I remember is that England were playing San Marino and that's what we watched while waiting for it to pass over. Was Lightning by the Second, a furious storm. Also had an overnight storm which lasted for quite a few others.

2016

Had a great Year but nothing stands out except The Yearly big Thunderstorm which lasted quite a long time.

2017

I believe this Year was the Year I moved House and got 3 Years of huge Storms. Starting with a Storm that seemed to last Century it kept going.

2018

In my Opinion the best Storm happened that Year relentless Lightning, Spider Lightning for Hours.

2019

Had a Storm in a Cricket game we were well on our way to 40 Runs above the average Score had lost a few Wickets mainly due to me trying to hit a Six and Lightning catching people by surprise Match was cancelled replayed and we were Bowled out for 38 after the Scores were Wiped and despite taking a Wicket with my First Ball we Lost but it had been a great Storm.

Yes, nothing really decent since July 2017 at night in this area.  We seemed to get a good run of night time storms from 2014 to 2017, June and July 14, July 15, June and September 16 stick out as really good for this region.  A decent enough offering did occur on 24 July 2019, but nothing as good as say July 2017.

Yes, here's hoping for some wardrobe-shakers this season..

Sure, here you go: https://www.netweather.tv/forum/topic/87949-convectivestorm-discussion-thread-8th-july-onwards/

Skip to somewhere around page 20-30 for the build-up to that particular plume. There are many dozens of pages associated with it, so I just left it open in a tab and read it in chunks over the course of a few days, but it's certainly fun to read it and reminisce about the storms of that particular day and really gets me in the mood for plumes (not that I ever stop being in that mood).

I think we discussed elsewhere the overnight storm on 14th - 15th September 2016 when I was staying at Alton, Hants, prior to going on a cruise. The tropical heat and constant lightning and thunder until 4am meant a sleepless night for many in the area. We had endured similar two evenings previously at our home in the NW of England, with widespread disruption in the Manchester area.

Best anvil ive seen this year so far, ready for the storm season. Could be chances through April as its looking on the cool/cold side for a while so as long as we get low pressure nearby with an unstable atmosphere, the warm April sun and cool air above could give us some thundery weather with good old April showers and possibly plenty of hail.

Edited the post soon after to make it more informative location-wise. Being from the island, I can see that the photo was shot from the downs near Ventnor, looking northeast, so the shower was likely off the coast of the Hayling Island area at the time.

Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 11 Apr 2021 - 05:59 UTC Mon 12 Apr 2021

ISSUED 06:39 UTC Sun 11 Apr 2021

ISSUED BY: Dan

Upper trough axis will slide southeastwards across Britain on Sunday, the associated cold pool aloft generating steep mid-level lapse rates and a few hundred J/kg CAPE in response to SSTs and diurnal heating inland. Showers near coasts initially, fuelled by the relative warmth of the sea, will become more numerous inland during the day. Hail (and snow) is likely in many of the showers, and the strongest cells could produce a few sporadic lightning strikes - although given the fairly shallow nature of convection the risk is generally quite low in any one location.
