For Cantley, Doncaster

A month when basic statistics do not show what really occurred!

The Mean temperature was exactly the same as the 20+ year average. However there were 14 days within that having a mean of 2.1 C and 8 in that period giving a mean of 0.2 C. It snowed on 5 days and lay for 9 days at 0900. Only slight falls with a maximum of 2 cm. A pretty wet month with over double the average.

2018 was the last February as cold.

Mean=5.6 (5.6)

Avge Max=8.7 (8.6) with the highest daytime value being 17.1 on 24 th and the coldest day 0.3 on 13 th

Avge Min=2.6 (2.5) The coldest night was-5.6 on 11 th and the warmest night 12.6 on 24th

Air frost 10 (8) and 11 (13) ground frosts

February - Hobart, Tasmania

This was the wettest February for 10 years with a mean temperature anomaly of +0.1c above 1991-2020, or +0.5c above 1961-1990.

Mean maximum:  22.4   ( +0.2 )

Mean minimum:   12.9   ( +0.1 )

Rainfall:   52mm   ( average 39mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ) :   3/from total 8

41mm fell on the night of the 5th - the bulk of the month's rain - as low pressure developed over the Great Australia Bight, rain feeding down in a muggy north-westerly airflow. The low lost its influence on its southward trajectory toward Tasmania, as cooler drier air began to feed through from the south. Another 7mm in a prefrontal rain band late on the 12th. Overwhelmingly calm and dry this month with southern latitude high pressure bringing a fair degree of cloudiness; with onshore winds from the southeast then east. Warmer and sunnier episodes with high pressure to the south east and a mainland airflow down Australia's eastern side, but this brought slightly elevated humidity.

Extremes in daily temperature for February ( records since 1882 )

High max:   31.8.....19th    ( record 40.1 in 1899 )

Low max:   15.8.....9th   ( record 9.6 in 1964 )

High min:   17.4.....20th   ( record 24.7 in 1912 )

Low min:   7.9.....24th   ( record 3.4 in 1980 )

  • Chilly with an increasing risk of frost

Once Monday's band of rain fades, the next few days will be drier. However, it will feel cool, even cold, in the breeze or under gloomy skies, with an increasing risk of frost. Read the full update here

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming. Week Ahead: Cool but largely dry until later in the week, when low pressure returns

We keep a chilly northerly flow going through much of the coming week, especially noticeable in the east. Cloud and rain spreading south Monday, but after that, most places largely dry until later in the week, when it looks to turn more showery. Read the full update here
