last day of summer !

Worst summer for weather in my memory here in the South East. Relentless cloud and ocassional drizzle day after day.

A brief glimpse of the sun earlier had people in the park looking skyward in shock. It was soon gone and we’re back again to the omnipresent shades of grey. Quite simply the worst August in my memory for sun and warmth and that goes back some 50 years.

The drizzle that is too light to even register on the radar, has arrived here, just in time to soak me whilst on the evening woofer walk, oh joy

No drizzle today, instead we have proper rain, is that an improvement, well at least rain is useful for the gardens unlike drizzle.  Occasionally some sun after the showers but doesn't last long until the next heavy cloud and shower moves in.

Tis indeed a wee bit grim, BB!

anyone had any cloud lately

Hmmm just a tad. Sitting at my kitchen table looking out to the garden and nothing but cloud and a moderate breeze.

Ours never got going! Those windy days back in July snapped most of the stems.

Grey and cool, doors closed, socks on, hands on the keyboard looking a bit blue. Remember when we used to get Indian Summers?

Hang in there, you never know it may still happen, Beeb app showing temps up to 24 beginning of next week and sunshine, although of course they've been known to be completely inaccurate (mostly lol) but yeah its only just September, some warmth could still come our way in the next few weeks

As for this morning, its cloudy again

Sure enough, next week looks like we could get some much longed for sunshine, maybe a bit late to book the week off work but hope it holds out for the following week☀️

While we wait for the weather to do something in our neck of the woods, at least there's some interesting reports/tweets to read:

From Weatherquest/Convective Weather:
It's been rather quiet for lightning activity over the past couple of weeks, rounding off the least thundery August since 2016. Here's a look at the thunder days (midnight-midnight) so far this year across the UK and Ireland. A max of 18 days is noted just SE of Ashford (Kent).

From Chris Bell, Chief Communications Officer, Weatherquest:
An impressive and depressing amount of cloud this August in Norfolk, here are the sunshine hours per day at my weather station. The August average for sunshine is around 6 hours per day...only one day in August 2021 (the 5th) recorded over that amount.

From Dan Holley, Weatherquest:
New paper recently published online, analysing an extreme rainfall event in south Norfolk on 16 August 2020.
"Thunderstorms and extreme rainfall in south Norfolk, 16 August 2020: meteorological analysis"

For the record, August 2021 stats for East Anglia which confirm it was a disappointingly cool and dull summer month:

  • Mean temperature slightly below average (-0.5°C)
  • Notably drier than normal (60%)
  • Dullest August since 1968, and 3rd dullest on record (65%)
  • The highest temperature of 26.4°C is the lowest August daily max in the region since 1993

And a look at the sunshine anomaly for each of the 3 months of summer confirms what many of us have felt - it's been a disappointingly dull summer, deteriorating as it progressed:

Well my annual summer hiatus has come to an end, we ready for another 6 months of snow spotting, radar watching, lamppost gazing and general fun?

Seems pretty nice out there at the moment, enough sunshine for me wanting to go out and seeing enough blue skies unlike the past few weeks.
