day 3 of the 2021 easterly sprinkle - despite having showers all night we probably reaching 0.5 cm now .

so sadly one of the weakest Thames steamers events , goes to show to nothing is set in stone despite wind direction and cold uppers.

many are asking why so weak when the potential is there , must be Darcy is still too close and effecting convection ??? Real shame could if had 3 solid days of snow under ice days which is very rare in london.

still beautiful and each cold snap is unique

We’ve done well here overnight, moderate sno all night according to radar and doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon. Hopefully, we can get a few beefy North Sea showers before Friday. Expect the unexpected!

Absoulute crud for  this part of the region just a tiny dusting, but nothing overnight.

Done well with streamers in the past, no luck this time, and unless all models have it wrong, this cold spell is done by the weekend.

Going to be interesting to see how this one plays out today... The NMM keeps that streamer going all day

Seems it will be a repeat of yesterday....? Pretty light by the time it gets to our neck of the woods. Need it to pep up further east?

Fell asleep super early last night after my snowy all nighter the night before, just woke up to a completely fresh covering. our 15cm looks like it’s easily surpassed 20cm with a couple more inches overnight!

I don't understand the reasons why, but had we had the deep cold in place before Darcy, surely the heavy rain we got preceding the event should have meant heavy consistent snowfall?

Imagine you’re boiling a pot of water and steam comes up. You then put a lid on and the steam can’t rise. Very simplified but same principle... we’ve got cold air at lower levels, if all went to plan the air in all levels above would get colder the higher you go and what we have at low levels could rise easily. As it stands we’ve got slightly warmer air at a certain height above, acting like the lid on the pot. This stops the rise and therefore the building up of the clouds.

Edit: meant to reply to your other post.

Is it almost an inversion?

Largely down to the upper warm front that developed and pushed north yesterday, it helped pep up showers/develop that broader area of snow yesterday evening, but unfortunately scuppered the chances of a decent convective easterly flow, areas further north aren't having this problem.

Air can only rise if the air above is colder than the air below, the upper warm front brought a wedge of slightly warmer mid-level air meaning the depth of cold is shallow & focused in the lower portion of the atmosphere.

That's a really clear explanation. Thanks.

I mean we should all know warm air rises, but to see that principal explained in the context of the charts and conditions we witnessed is very useful.

Another question if I may, was this warm front an effect of Darcy clearing through?

You can tell the wind dropped off when the snow fell overnight as it’s managed to settle on surfaces where the wind was just sweeping it off of the night before, a full covering even in the trees now making it look arctic

I'm not actually sure, yesterdays area of precip was very badly modelled so it's difficult to tell.

Moderate size snow flakes in NE london. Heaviest ive seen this week so far!

Can concur with that lb, that area of Snow has edged across the Thames and it is now Snowing steadily, here in Lee.

Still light sideways snow here. Slightly thicker dusting than there was yesterday...

Let's see what the day brings!

Not really much was added after I got home from work last night. Just a few flurries of snow from time to time. Again a streamer just 5-10 miles north of here. Given a more easterly vector to the wind I expect today will be mostly dry here and probably seeing more sunshine.

Another 2-3cm fell overnight here in Sevenoaks and it's still falling. My pup Sirius enjoyed his morning walk
