Those temperatures don't look as cold on wxcharts. Midday on 14th and 15th February, it has many parts above freezing.

They wouldn't - the charts you're showing are from the 0z....

That wouldn’t surprise me . It would be a different matter if this was mid January but the sun is getting a bit more strength by mid February . Dew points should be very low though so snow should hold up well .

Its remarkable just how good snow retention is with low dew points even if temps get a few degrees above zero.

Interesting model ends run for the ECM, begs the question of what will the HP Cell over the UK do next ....?  If read in conjunction with the GFS 12z @ +240  a shift back north / north east is plausible, opening the door for the 975mb LP south of Greenland to track Se , under cutting the HP,.. classic slider anyone ?

Typical Cornwall is always in the warm air  We always miss out

Have you checked the charts for Tuesday? The channel streamer is on! ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️

On the general scenario, worth remembering there's been quite a shift in the past 24 hours, from rain pushing to the Scottish border on Thursday, and now for the precipitation not to make it out of Wales. Worth holding your horses till the morning at least for anything past D4 - a Scandi High looks guaranteed at some point, but how it affects the UK is on a kinfe-edge - there'll be a point which separates continental air from lol ng drawn SWly air, and next to no middle ground.

Not normally into over estimating things but charts really do show something very cold,

looking 1980s style several SSW must be at the core of what is showing.I would be prepared

for some records to be broken in many different scenarios.

JMA's lining up another beast  - so it's just ECM looking dodgy tonight.

Hmmm, ECM ends with a boring UK High and Athens Special.

Plenty of scope for upgrades there

If you look at Iceland between +192 and +240 it is also retrogressing West ....

Yes the trend is quite clear, fair to say that's what it shows tonight, but tomorrow? Maybe ?‍♂️

Big hitter ! Lol nice of you to say that but others have  more technical knowledge. I’m the meat and two veg , no frills generally but try my best to give an impartial view even though I’m a hardened coldie !

In terms of the cold spell, yes the trend is now to extend the cold as the high to the ne is putting up a good fight .

The bigger uncertainty is whether the UK can tap into that amazing deep cold pool to the east .

As long as you keep a flow off the continent even if the upper air temps relax the surface will still be cold .

So some severe night time frosts especially over snow cover .

I think we need a few more runs to see whether the models are going to go for a quicker attempt to bring in that cold pool , or whether they take the longer attempt . This is by no means guaranteed to land though , but I certainly hope it does !

Historic spell of cold weather in London on ECM 12z the coldest spell of weather in 30 years. The EPS also has a maximum of 1C in London on Friday confirming extension to cold spell!

I thought that chart looked quite good?  Although I agree the pressure cell needs to be further north.
