proper flakes here, it may even be sticking but needs to keep this intensity to do anything.

I had to get out before the sun melted it all.

Some brilliant walking conditions this morning apart from the sheer depth of snow, almost a foot fell here last night and not a Met O warning in site. made for some good photographs though, altho

Heaviest single fall of snow for several years here and the heaviest in April since 1981.

Same here, heavy flurries on and off and the loose snow on surfaces blowing in wind too. If we got persistent snow from streamers we'd finally get reasonable accumulation.

More accurate than the apps. Don’t taste the yellow snow

Had a dandruff storm here about 20 mins ago. Most of the showers that maintain reasonable intensity have been going South or North of here, such is the nature of these scenarios. The one positive thing is that anything that does fall from now onwards should stick, so I remain cautiously optimistic that we might get a dusting overnight if showers can align nicely. I'll treat any more as a bonus.

When people say it "smells like snow" its to do with the cold causing a change in molecules in the air which makes odors less pungent and creates a fresh clean smell... also most of the airs moisture is within the snow so the air is also dryer , all this combined creates a sensual experience

@Dkeane3 and @raul_sbd we are going to be in a dry slot for a while longer. We need the showers to hit between Penistone and Holmfirth but they’re either going north or south at the moment. Not sure if this will change overnight.

Lovely wintry day here. Snowed for much of the day but just too light for any accumulation.

Was it a letdown? Depends on what you were hoping for.

I was expecting heavier showers to be honest as a few models modelled these (GEM and Arpege), but in general they have lacked the oomph required. That also goes for the east of the hills!

We could have done with slightly colder air too, don’t get me wrong, it’s very cold but not in the same league as BFTE. 2018 was very special as absolutely everything that fell settled and we had afternoon temps of -4C. I actually think Manchester does better on an E’ly or even ESE’ly rather than an ENE’ly too, just looking back at 1st March 2018 it seems to favour our patch for showers.

We’ll see what happens tonight but my expectations are fairly low.

I said this was to be a learning curve - on reflection it’s important not to compare all easterly episodes with BFTE - that was a brutal one.

    Interesting post, Joe.

Here's a thought. Which was the bigger letdown? The current easterly or this time last year that gawd awful WNWly that so many winter lovers were hoping for to deliver after the terrible winter up to that point?

I think more people in our region have seen at least falling snow from this than they did from that. Infact they were hardly any showery activity, last year!

Eh, who'd of thought it. A bit of decent intensity to a shower and everything is white.

Definitely the latter Kevin! I think this has been an interesting spell, we had a light covering and at least we’ve seen plenty of snow falling. I’m looking forward to the properly cold overnight temps too.

Yea could have included you too in my image above. We’re gonna stay dry for a bit. I think an E’ly is better for us.

Meh, ever so slightly lower temperatures rather than the freezing ones we'd get of we'd actually been blessed with any meaningful snow cover from this rubbish.

    😂😂😂😂😂.

Speaking of which, temp has just dropped to 0C at Manchester airport. Much more likely for snow to accumulate tonight if we get the showers. Radar looks good for a few of us, gaps permitting.

    • Thundery breakdown underway but still some last minute sunshine and warmth this weekend

The heatwave is over, with the breakdown getting underway in southern England first this weekend. Further north and west there'll still be plenty of very warm sunshine on offer, before the weather becomes much less settled countrywide next week. Read the full update here
