I've spent the weekend in the MIdlands region. Not too bad yesterday and warm when the sun came out. A poor morning however today, with steady rather than heavy rain  putting a dampener on things. Got back to a dry NW this evening but evidence of heavy rain earlier. Off back to the N Yorkshire coast tomorrow and hoping that the heavy showers will have started to ease by the time I get there. Matt T on Country File promising better midweek onwards as the low pressure over us is replaced by a ridge of high pressure. Nothing spectacular in terms of temperature but at least it should kill off the showers.

Glad things are going to improve, hoping for a few clear nights/pre dawns as the Perseid meteor shower peaks mid week.  Didn't catch them last year due to thunderstorms (of which one was a fantastic storm)  the year before was clouded out from my vantage point, may be a bit luckier this year.  Rain cleared up mid afternoon, quite pleasant out at the moment, blue skies, attractive cloudscapes with the dregs of todays sunshine.

A grim wet cloudy chilly autumnal day today.  Nature's revenge. Suspect someone has been grumbling too much about having to water the garden.

Until these last 2 or 3 days we've had a memorable sunny hot summer in Bowland. Kindly weather for superb displays of flowers and butterflies up to the middle of last week. Dry enough on the land to allow heavy machines to crop and harvest grass from the most difficult fields. But nicely enough rain now and then to keep plants growing.

Picture below taken in the 6 day dry spell in late June.  Glorious summer weather.  June rain total only 35.1mm.

In July we had more good dry spells including from mid month a 2 week drought and heat. 2 days with max 29.4 C.

Yet July rain total, 124.8 mm, was just above the 52 yr average of 110.3 mm. High evaporation soon got rid of puddles.

But big change today. Collected 52.4 mm from the gauge at 9 GMT for previous 24hrs. About 20mm of that fell between midnight and 1am GMT.

Come back summer all is forgiven,    Sunhat not put away and there's fruit to be ripened.

45C for the likes of Cordoba and Seville next weekend. It's so hot it's not even red it's purple/lilac.

Wow, I've been to Seville when it was very hot, but not that hot.  Didn't see as much of the city as planned as the heat was exhausting, spent quite a bit of time in the cathedral.  Remember seeing a couple of people being sick on the roadside, many cafes, shops and bars sprayed out cold mists of water on you as you walked by.  We bought bottles of water to drink half and tip the over half over us, the water got too warm to drink otherwise.  Enjoyed it though, but was relieved to board the train back to Malaga.  How long is this heat expected to last?  Hats off to them.

Oh dear. Overcast, wet, windy and currently 14°C. Since Wednesday it's been really poor, barely stopped raining, temps 14-18" assume the rest of the region has been the same. Yesterday was particularly bad, max of just 16.3°C and 25 mm (1 inch of rain)!

Looks like we'll get a couple of warmer, sunnier days next week before back to the cloud and rain again. Looks like summer is over. Oh well, it's August, it's the summer holidays, tbh I expected it to go down the pan. At least we had a decent June and July this year.

Yes I never rate August, can be the warmest month of the summer, namely due to high minima, but rarely is it the driest and certainly not the sunniest.

Been a long time since we had a dry one, indeed I can't remember the last such occurance.

There is still plenty of time left for summerlike conditions, but from mid August, the summer feeling ebbs away quickly.

The coming week looks an improving picture, all dependent on how close the low pressure moving close to NW Scotland gets, it might just brush the region, to leave a fine end to the week.

This weekend has been a bit of a shocker, not a chink of sunshine, incessant rain yesterday and on and off today and temps very poor languishing in the 14-17 degree range, at times it felt like October.

It looks like it will last a good 5-7 days by the looks of these ensembles. Not a place I'd like to live in that's for sure.

Upper air temps pushing 30C!  Never seen that on an ensemble graph before.

Currently 17C, Sunny Intervals, Moderate Westerly Breeze. Meh, pleasant enough.

Well today has turned out ok with decent sunny spells for the last few hours and pleasantly warm. Not the horror show "downpours" that Granada reports last night said was going to happen.

Heavy shower passing through.

Just watching the track. A line full of washing to race out and collect soon.  You watch, it will probably thunder now the warnings have lapsed.

A lacklustre day. However, so far we've stayed dry, much better than the forecast. Lots of grey cloud, temps a poor max 18 degrees. Uninspiring Monday.

Must've got lucky here it's stayed dry all day with plenty of sunshine, max of 18.8, min of 11.9, just a touch below average (av hi 19/ av lo 13 in August here). Not a bad day.

Mean temp for August currently just 14.3C here, a couple of degrees below average, 72 mm of rain at the nearest weather station, it's been a cool and wet start to August that's for sure (CET is holding up OK though at 16.0C).

Currently Mostly Cloudy, Breezy and 18.5C. No rain so far. For some reason recently the pigeons have taken a fancy to sitting on top of my shed roof. No idea why.

Great afternoon for getting out on two wheels again. Fantastic views from Tandle Hill in Royton looking out over Greater Manchester.

Well it's looking increasingly likely that the Spanish all time record could be under threat on either Friday or Saturday. The record is 46.9C set in Cordoba in July 2017.

Almost off the scale.

Interesting to see Spain seeing extreme heat similar to summer 2017 as this summer has felt a bit 2017ish especially the meh kind of UK August so far. Overall thanks to an ok early summer and the July heatwave it will probably come out as an average summer for us here in the NW bar any extremes later this month and a poor, wet summer for those in London & the SE, anywhere Midlands southwards really has seen a not great summer compared to normal.
