Big cold hail shower sent me back indoors from garden veg plot.   Now a short burst of sun laughing at us.

If anyone else like me is feeling frustrated by this difficult gardening season, try looking at the Newfoundland and Labrador gardening internet sites.   Like us up here in the wet, cold and cloudy Lancs hills, gardeners there don't really get plants going till mid May.   But somehow veg gardeners succeed, despite their late start and short season, having developed cunning ways of coping.

Have a look at these.  There's hope yet for us maybe.

6.3'c with a temperature drop of -1'c every hour for Buxton with a wintry-mix in the showers outside, I saw a bit of snow on the tops towards Kinder earlier this morning (although the Cat and Fiddle's snow accumulation was more evident on the webcam.) You'd have never guessed I was getting a 'sweat on' out under blue skies and strong May sunshine only 4 hours ago.

Dropped to about 5c at 3pm under a rain cloud. Feels bitter in the wind. Hard to believe it's summer in less than 4 weeks..

Crazy weather we've been enduring over the past few months.

Remember crossing the Canadian coast around Newfoundland on the way to LA and couldn’t believe how much different that side of the Atlantic was to this side but at pretty much the same latitude.

we moan about the crappy weather in the UK but our region is at the same latitude as Hudson Bay and without the Gulf Stream we’d be stuffed as a place to live.

at least we’d have a bit more snow in winter but the thoughts of summers similar to the last couple of weeks doesn’t appeal.

Shocking here. Cold and wet.

Cheshire Gap is horrid, generally wettest wind direction here, tomorrow could be a shocker, definitely wet for some around Staffs/Crewe area

Thanks for the warning, I'm returning to Crewe from N Yorkshire tomorrow afternoon. I'll keep the long-johns handy

I think we've had more 'Wintry' showers here the last couple of weeks than we've had all Winter.

12mm collected this morn for previous 24hrs.

No showers since then but many lurking and boiling up currently over the fells.    I always think the NW is shaped like a big high backed armchair, collecting and exciting rain from airstreams from all western sources.  No escape.  There's a lot of Atlantic out there.

Alas Saturday looks ghastly.

Tomorrow looks vile. One of those days where staying indoors looks a sure bet. Sunday looking a lot better for going outside.

I made the best of today before tomorrow's dank & dreary weather arrives and headed out on a local 9 mile stroll, pretty much the same weather story that it's been over the past few days with relatively clear skies in the morning followed by some beefy showers into the afternoon (looking a little more low-topped today with not many getting above 15,000ft.)

Yup, the forecasters got it spot on

They alway do when it’s something we don’t want.

if it had been February and heavy snow and blizzards, this lot would have no doubt suddenly headed south.

10.6mm picked up this morning at 10BST.  Slightly lighter look out west.  Hoping maybe had the worst for now though still bucketing down.   Chilly -- only 6.1C.  Sneaky E wind.

Hope so, off over the border into Yorkshire shortly to have a Saturday pub lunch for our daughters birthday.

It’s all covered up but even so, not the best conditions for going out.

Rain fizzled out by mid afternoon.  Wind from SW.  Vague sunlight.  Felling warmer -- now 13C.  Plants seem to be shooting up and birds singing again.  A few apple buds just showing red tips.  Might have some blossom next week.
