A thoroughly wet and miserable day here and a chilly feel out in single figure temperatures.  It's been a while since we last had a day like this and we do need the rain, but sods law that it has coincided with the bank holiday.

Probably the most vile day in May I can remember for a fair while. Shocking.

On a par with Hurricane Charlie on August BHM 1986 but I’m pretty sure that it was mid afternoon before the rain and wind from that arrived whereas todays rain started mid morning and has done its best to ruin the full day.

Squall line passing through here now, no doubt followed by a clearance.

just a shame it’s to late to salvage anything for the pubs and restaurants relying on today to make something from the extended weekend.

Foul day here in S Cheshire rain from 8am onwards turning heavy from around midday and squally in the last hour or so we need the rain but maybe not today! It’s very early days yet but not too keen on the prospects for this summer either I feel it be poor or mediocre - poorer than last year anyway.

Absolutely hammering down at the moment.  Don't know what my garden temp is, the thermometer is face down on the opposite of the garden, bit breezy.

That was a bit of excitement for a otherwise dull & dreary day and it looks like a second smaller LEWP for some behind this one that's just developed, max windspeed for the day was a little more than predicated in Buxton at 53mph (GFS had it down for 48mph.)

This is the back edge of the squall that just passed over, shows how dark it went.  I can see a hint of blue sky beyond it.

Bleak wet day and winds rattled the slates a bit.  A bit if a break but belting down beefy showers again now.  Max got to 8.4C.  Big puddles are back.

Weren't there suggestions that we could expect climate to become similar to that in Newfoundland if polar ice loss affects the Gulf Stream?

St John's weather forecast is like ours this week.  Interesting to see on websites how Newfoundland gardeners cope with a very short growing season, maybe only starting in June.   And they've all sort of tricks for surviving wind and heavy rain.    Much use of polytunnels of course and indoor sowing to give plants a start.   Garden vegs pretty basic varieties.  Simlar to what can be grown (hopefully)  in our NW hills.

Heaviest rain of the day here now as the trailing part of the squall line moves through. Absolutely bucketing it down.

Bowness Bay at 4pm today looked like a wet Monday in January. Not a soul about, apart from a few hardy folk sat outside cafes/bars, most places had there chairs stacked up on tables. What a woeful May Bank Holiday Monday.

Two bright flashes of lightning, loud crack of thunder.  Black as night.  Blowing a gale and hail stones.  Flashes to my north west.

A blustery wet start to the day here. Wind was really howling at times in the night with rain lashing against the window at times. More akin to weather I would expect in autumn/winter than early May. A wet and blustery day coming up with frequent showers and decidedly cool.

Collected 27.5mm at 10BST this morning for the previous 24hrs.

Total for entire month of April was 19.4mm.

Still cloudy and bleak, blustery and showery up here.  Temp currently 6.9c.

Incessant heavy rain since lunchtime, max temp 6 degrees.. miserable!

We needed it.

Rivers Leven and Kent were near gravel last week.

It's just the unseasonable cold we have to contend with.

Very rough out, feels like February.

It’s literally like January today, it will definitely snow over the tops in this set up.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
