It won't be long before we start seeing the first reports of settling snow in our region. Eastern facing coasts in Kent and Essex should start getting the wintrier ppn from the Netherlands in the next half hour.

    Broadstairs will be first then.

No it's showing on land, just SW of Dover & NE of Folkstone on the latest two frames on the netweather radar.  Thinking about it now though it hasn't moved in those two frames so it might be one of those anoprop things or whatever they're called? I'm not sure.

So i'm pretty sure the precip type shown in the radar is modelled rather than measured. They just measure live precip, not type

Will that have any bearing on us though?

This will be looked into by the MetO

Very windy and its already feeling bitter with that wind.

Only a fraction of what is to come!

The UK MetO will be looking into this new Snow Code Red which has been issued by their Dutch counterparts. Don't be surprised if the MetO upgrade the snow potential ❄️

I would expect one to be issued in the next couple of hours

Latest radar is a thumbs up. And this doesn’t show western precipitation 7B082ED5-3AA2-4590-8CA3-5BAA16C8CA1B.thumb.png.dbf99f0595a82f83c99625e9cad3ca98.png

I can confirm it’s now snowing in the Elham valley. Temp is 1.2C.

How strong is the wind as in howling or just blowing? Also is the snow of powder or transient (wet and heavy) thanks 👍🏻

I'm close to Wadhurst. I'm hopeful it might kick off rather sooner than 5. Don't want to get ahead of myself and clearly no guarantees, but we can do very well in these set ups, and at this point the extra altitude of the Weald is helpful as the air coming from the NE flows uphill over a distance to reach us.

You are in one of the prime areas for this set-up, I'm intrigued to see how well you do in the coming days.

I'd brace yourself to get literally 0cms this entire week I'm afraid, I think we are stuffed this far west.

Small chance maybe tomorrow  evening in any arcing band and there is still the wildcard of a streamer, but I'd rate our odds of getting one strong enough at maybe 5-10%. I'm sure there will be one, but its gonna whiff out before it gets close to us.

Probably 50-50 if we even get a dusting now mate

I agree that this is a sensible attitude at the moment given where you both are. I would be living more in hope than expectation over there.

But what has changed that you are now less optimistic than you were earlier today?

East Kent snow triangle. It's looking good for the downs

I guess key question was that expected. If yes ok. If no. It is news, but relevant in this region?

As you know, KNMI named the current storm 'Darcy' which is what they are enduring as a Snow Code Red right now. This storm is heading for the UK - SE quadrant, so we will know in due course by the MetO if this will have a bearing on our shores. Interesting times ahead ❄️

Possibly a few flakes if I really try in a heavy bit. I’ll be off to sleep now for a bit

It’s pretty gusty. My anemometer broke this morning so I can’t give you an exact speed.  Small powdery flakes that are swirling around in the wind.

North Sea ppn is really pepping up

Radar doesn't look that impressive for heavy stuff - but very similar look to the early January stuff that was wrong side of marginal - and a lot of places saw over 30mm of rain in 24-48 period.

What do you mean when you say ppn is really pepping up if you then say it doesn't look too good for heavy stuff?

I don't think this will be marginal a few hours from now, and there's plenty coming for many and heaps for lucky ones. Stay patient.

Snowing heavily now and the temperature is dropping rapidly. About 0.1C every 5 minutes.

    Where is your location?
