A dry start to the night with clear intervals but thickening cloud brought wet snow and sleet, followed by freezing rain, during the early hours. The temperature got just above freezing by dawn and since then it's been cold and cloudy with light, occasionally moderate, rain.

Interesting how steep the temperature gradient is at the moment Watnall in Nottinghamshire is 2C and Shobdon in Herefordshire is 12C, its a bit less than 90 miles as the crow flies. It illustrates the 'battle of the air masses'
